Job Summary

The Research & Outreach Librarian has responsibility for the design, promotion, and delivery of research products and services on behalf of ALIS, AECOM Library and Information Services.

The Research & Outreach Librarian has responsibility for the design, promotion, and delivery of research products and services on behalf of ALIS.

The post holder is responsible for the strategic development of research services and products, with the focus within the next two to five years being to:

  • Launch and promote the ALIS research service to AECOM staff

  • Create and deliver advice and training initiatives to improve research skills across the business

  • Bid for and undertake research in response to tenders, offering research services to clients on a fee-earning basis

Job Responsibilities

  • Work with the ALIS team to deliver high quality research and information gathering services for current enquiries

  • Contribute to service delivery as part of the ALIS enquiry rota, demonstrating a proactive and flexible approach to customer service

  • Perform in-depth literature searches using in-house and external resources

  • Perform complex and sensitive research projects in response to business needs

  • Provide ad hoc research support for the AECOM work winning team for key strategic bids

  • Promote and advocate for ALIS research services to stakeholder groups in the business

  • Serve as the Research partner within the business - offering expert advice to AECOM staff on developing and improving their research strategies

  • Devise and deliver guidance and training initiatives to improve research skills for technical staff undertaking basic searches

  • Responsible for education and awareness of information rights/IPR and importance of information risk in the business

  • Develop ALIS research best practice and maintain policies and procedures in relation to this

  • Build relationships with technical leaders, practice groups, learning networks and other communities (stakeholders) within the business

  • Design new products and initiatives in conjunction with AECOM stakeholder groups in response to AECOM’s business strategies

  • Develop metrics to determine and demonstrate the value and impact of research services to the business

  • Report to the business on the scope and impact of research conducted by and for AECOM

  • Respond to requests in tenders for research services – selling ALIS research expertise to clients on a fee-earning basis

  • Undertake other duties in support of the work of ALIS as may be required by the Head of Library and Information Services, Europe

Specialist Skills:

  • A skilled researcher with experience of information seeking, developing research strategies, and undertaking literature search and critical analysis

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write clear, concise reports, papers and/or briefings for users to aid decision making

  • Evidence of problem solving in a structured and rigorous way

  • Experience in evaluating complex information, analysing and extracting key facts and presenting summary information at the appropriate level of detail for each request

  • Ability to use judgement to assess the quality and authority of sources and ensure weighting is applied and clearly indicated in the outcome

  • Knowledge of licensing, copyright and IPR in a commercial environment

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Well organised, with a proven ability to work effectively, without direct supervision at times, and successfully to manage and prioritise multiple simultaneous research requests

  • Experience in identifying and engaging with communities of practice, learning networks and other discrete constituencies in a technical environment

  • Experience in building and maintaining collaborative relationships with colleagues at all levels

  • Flexibility and the willingness to respond positively to changing priorities in the work place

  • At ease with innovation and change and an adaptive and flexible approach to work.

Minimum Requirements

  • Previous experience working in research services, ideally in a business or commercial environment.

  • Demonstrable commitment to continuous professional development.

  • Enthusiastic, highly motivated, flexible and able to exercise appropriate initiative.

  • Demonstrates sector awareness – knowledge of current trends and developments in relation to the role of Research & Outreach Librarian

Preferred Qualifications

  • Educated to a degree-level, in an information or library specialist area, or possessing equivalent experience.
