Are you an experienced design engineer capable of delivering outline and detailed design for potable water or wastewater treatment and infrastructure? Due to an exciting period of growth, we have an exciting role available in the AECOM team based in St Albans.

You will work alongside our project managers and Technical Leads throughout the project design and delivery cycle, making technical decisions in various design stages of water and wastewater utility projects to include carrying out feasibility studies, reference designs, detailed designs, and preparing reports and technical specifications.

The Team

  • Our Water teams have delivered some of the most high-profile projects in the UK, so your projects and clients will be varied and interesting. Examples of our current projects and clients include:

  • Wessex Water – AECOM has been appointed on several AMP7 frameworks, including the Capital Delivery framework.

  • Thames Water – AECOM has positions across all scales of delivery including major projects such as Thames Tideway Tunnel, Deephams STW upgrade and ‘Capital Delivery’ infra and non-infra schemes across the Thames region.

  • Severn Trent Water – AECOM has been appointed on major schemes Lot 1 of Severn Trent Water’s new Design Services Framework for AMP7. Our portfolio of projects in building rapidly.

  • You will join our technical discipline team and wider technical practice network, enabling you to build your knowledge, skills and career with like-minded engineers globally.

The Role:

  • As a Principal Engineer, you will work closely with our Water teams in the South East, as well as the Water and other supply discipline teams nationwide. You will lead the delivery of projects through from conception to handover. Some of these projects will be large-scale and prestigious CV builders, but you may also take a leading role on a number of concurrent projects.

  • You will lead water designs and tasks, for both internal and external clients, identifying the need for design resources and specialist input (ecological, geotechnical, hydraulic modelling, MEICA etc.) You will take responsibility for managing design teams (both in the UK and within our Global Delivery Centres), mentoring technical design staff and engaging with clients and stakeholders. You will deliver to a high calibre of technical quality, contribute to bids, and take an active role in maintaining and contributing to AECOM’s health and safety culture.

  • Responsibilities may also include line management, leading proposals and reviewing / verifying the output of others.

Minimum Requirements

  • Experience in the full cycle of project design delivery from inception to detailed design.

  • Sufficient experience to lead major potable and wastewater infrastructure and / or non-infra engineering projects.

  • Ability to liaise and engage with clients and key stakeholders.

  • Provide mentoring, guidance and technical advice to support and supervise others.

  • Flexible to travel to other AECOM and client offices.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience working in a digital delivery environment using BIM and 3D design tools.

  • Experience working with contractors (in a design and build environment) and / or working for UK Water Authority clients.

  • Project experience of using and managing the use of Common Data Environments (CDEs).

  • Contractual awareness, e.g. NEC3 and NEC4

  • Project management experience.

  • Industry recognised Health and Safety qualifications.

  • Experience of having undertaken a mentoring role in developing staff capabilities

  • Experience of acting as a Delegated Engineer (or similar), guiding others towards ch

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineering degree qualified.

  • Chartered Engineer Status.
