AECOM Archaeological Field Supervisor in Richmond Hill, Ontario

Canada - Ontario, Barrie

Job Summary

AECOM is looking for numerous Archaeological Field Supervisors to be based in our Barrie, Ontario office.

  • Responsible for overseeing Stages 2-4 archaeological fieldwork while supervising a team of archaeologists based out of our office in Barrie, Ontario.

  • Must be able to perform strenuous archaeological fieldwork in all weather conditions (lift up to 40 lbs and be capable of repetitive movement of shoveling and screening dirt), and be able to work out of town within Ontario for extended periods of time.

  • Supervisors are expected to prioritize health and safety and follow all AECOM procedures including those related with our stringent Covid-19 measures.

  • Sensitivity and awareness combined with a respectful attitude towards Indigenous culture and people is a must. Collaboration in a team environment is key.

  • Valid Ontario driver’s license is preferred. Reliable transportation to and from Barrie office or designated project meet spot essential.

Technical Skills:

  • Valid Research or Professional class licence issued by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport.

  • 5+ years of experience conducting archaeological fieldwork preferred.

  • 1+ field seasons independently supervising teams during excavations under own issued Research License required.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct strenuous physical labour outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to supervise field crews conducting Stages 2-4 archaeological assessments.

  • Experience operating high precision GPS and Total Station equipment.

  • Proven physical ability and care when conducting excavations.

  • Firm understanding of MHSTCI Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists.

  • Artifact identification skills and experience for the identification of both Indigenous and Euro-Canadian material.

  • Valid Drivers License

  • First Aid Certification an asset

  • Familiarity with Fulcrum and Collector Apps an asset

Team Work:

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment

  • Be responsible for the production rate of the field team

  • Motivate field teams in challenging conditions to complete the assigned work

  • Willingness to continually learn and take direction from Field and Office Managers.

  • Conduct performance reviews and effectively manage field staff.

Communication:

  • Provide clear and accurate communication regarding field discoveries, field strategies, and staff issues between the field and office teams.

  • Communicate with Project Managers if conditions change

  • Clearly communicate and document discussions with field technicians regarding performance and behaviour.

Organizational Skills:

  • Attend work in a prepared manner for all weather conditions, ensuring appropriate weather gear in readily available.

  • Ability to take clear and accurate field notes.

Health and Safety:

  • Leads by example for health and safety processes.

  • Manages and promotes health and safety processes in the field, including the stringent Covid-19 safety measures that AECOM has put in place.

Commitment & Dedication:

  • Must be willing to work out of town, across Ontario for extended periods of time.

Leadership:

  • Leading by example, taking ownership for supervisory responsibilities.

  • Provide effective and respectful supervision to the field crew as well as support to Field and Office Managers.

  • Understand the time alloted to complete the field program and work within

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS in archaeology or related field + 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
