AECOM is seeking a Research and Development Scientist 3 for our Pittsburgh, PA location.
1) An experienced scientist is sought for supporting Rare Earth Element research and development across multiple disciplines. (Characterization, Sample preparation, Separation)
Project work is anticipated to be focused on providing chemical extractions for the AECOM REE activity. Listed below are several examples of the responsibilities for the candidate;
The candidate will provide research expertise in novel methods of extraction of REE’s from coal and coal byproduct materials. The support will include such methods as; chemical extraction, reactive grinding, and associated characterization. Familiarity with multiple methods is necessary for success.
The candidate will utilize solid: liquid and liquid: liquid extractions to recover rare earth elements from coal byproducts, with a goal of obtaining a high lanthanide concentrate.
The candidate will provide research expertise with a good understanding of sample preparation, separation, sensing, and characterization methods practiced or under development at NETL.
This position requires a degree in either Chemistry, Geology or Chemical Engineering with a focus in REE extraction chemistry.
The candidate should have extensive chemical instrumentation background. (Inorganic and organic chemical characterization skills, such as: particle size analyzer, SEM, XRD, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, elemental analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis -TGA).
The candidate should have an extensive history of peer reviewed journal articles. (High impact value)
The candidate should a good presentation record at national and international conferences.
The candidate will have at least 5 years of experience in the field of Rare Earth Metal Extraction
The candidate will be responsible for generation of information about types and concentrations of REEs, their associations with mineral and other phases in the materials of interest, and their pertinent physical properties.
The candidate will also be responsible for their independent research effort and providing recommendation to the team for future project direction.
The candidate will be responsible for the development and evaluation of lab-scale physical, mechanical, and chemical separation techniques to extract/concentrate REEs from coal and coal by-product materials.
An update will be due by the end of each month briefly describing the accomplishments from that month and the next month’s forecast. Also, the applicant will include the relevant status of patents, publications or presentations. Reported information concerning publications and presentations shall include full title, author listing and journal or society name.
An update will be due by the end of the quarter briefly describing that quarter’s accomplishments.
The candidate will participate in group meetings. Group meetings are designed to allow the applicant to discuss current research and promote discussion with fellow researchers. The manager will request the applicant to provide a PowerPoint presentation for group meetings. The frequency of these presentations is generally once every 6 months but can occur at a higher rate.
The candidate will also participate in sub-group meeting by presenting research plans and recent results in an informal, small group forum on a bi-weekly schedule.
This position will require extensive interface with customers and potential collaborative partners, so excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. The complexity of information to be managed will require excellent organization skills and an attention to detail.
The candidate should have some leadership experience.
Bachelors degree and 5 years of job-related experience in biology, chemistry, economics, geology, physics, mathematic or related scientific field or a Masters degree or equivalent. Excellent communications and analytical skills, working knowledge of computer systems and integrated software application programs. Position may require travel. Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a security clearance.
Ph.D. or M.S. degree in either Chemistry, Geology or Chemical Engineering with a focus in REE extraction chemistry
Preferably, the prospective employee would be familiar with working in a GOGO (Government Owned Government Operated) national laboratory environment.
