AECOM Archaeological Technician in Phoenix, Arizona

Job Summary

The AECOM Central Region’s Cultural Resource Department is seeking creative, highly talented archaeological technicians for temporary, as-needed employment with our Phoenix, AZ office. Candidates could work on various cultural resource survey and archaeological excavation projects in the Southwest, and depending on the Department’s staffing needs, throughout the central U.S. This is a part-time variable position, meaning work days and times will be determined on an as-needed basis. In most cases, this position reports to a field director or archaeological supervisor and must be able to work effectively in both field and laboratory settings, either independently or as part of a team.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting archaeological survey and excavations.

  • Documenting archaeological and historical resources; must be able to take accurate field notes, complete forms, and draw accurate profiles and plan view sketches.

  • Using a digital camera to photo-document artifacts, features, and sites and keeping an accurate photo log.

  • The position may require writing site descriptions and contributions to reports.

  • Processing artifacts (wash, mark and catalog) and performing basic analysis of artifacts.

  • Consulting with a supervisor about unusual problems and developments.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Prior experience with implementing archaeological fieldwork logistics, protocols, and data collection.

  • Knowledge of basic field survey and excavation techniques, ability to process (wash, catalog and mark) recovered archaeological artifacts, properly fill out field and laboratory forms.

  • Ability to perform manual work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain and variable conditions including heat, cold, moisture, and dryness; working alone in isolated/remote areas; performing repetitive bending and stooping, standing/walking, power gripping (hand tools, levers, etc.), and fine hand movements; lifting 25 to 75 pounds; wearing personal protective equipment, including safety glasses/goggles, gloves, safety shoes/boots, hard hat, long-sleeve shirts, and snake guards; working with arms above shoulder level; climbing ladders or stairs and working at heights or in confined spaces; working safely around heavy, moving, dangerous equipment; operating of vehicles; and performing keyboard/mouse operations.

  • Flexibility to travel overnight and out of state for up to a month or more at a time.

  • Must pass a state and federal criminal history/security background check; many projects/clients are security sensitive.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and understanding of equipment and technology used to collect and record archaeological data, including GPS applications and Microsoft applications.

  • Strong attention to detail, with proven ability to follow specific instructions.

  • Ability to write well, including artifact, feature, site, and landscape descriptions

  • Excellent work ethic and team-player attitude.

  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with other project staff.Undergraduate degree in anthropology, history, museum studies, or related field and have attended an archaeological field school.

  • 2+ years of experience in archaeological survey and excavation fieldwork and analysis in the Southwest.

  • General familiarity with cultural resource management protocols and processes, including compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and National Environmental Policy Act.

  • Some experience with conducting laboratory analysis of both prehistoric and historic material

  • CPR/First Aid Training
