Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Traffic Incident Management Specialist II to be based in Lake Mary, Florida. Operators are responsible for using Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) software and other resources to monitor freeway and arterial roadways and traffic signal systems to manage events/incidents; dispatching and/or coordinating response with incident management personnel and emergency responders; answering and responding to calls from emergency response partners and, occasionally, the public; communicating, coordinating, and collaborating with other TMC staff, Department personnel, and partner agencies.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Works under the guidance of managerial/supervisory personnel, but often independent of direct supervision, performing routine and repetitive duties, sometimes in a fast paced and intense environment

  • Utilization of ATMS software and other resources to monitor and control various Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices such as closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, traffic detectors, Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), and traffic signal systems

  • Monitor video images for the detection and verification of events such as crashes, debris, abandoned or disabled vehicles, and hazardous or non-hazardous spills

  • Use ATMS software to log incidents, construction, and maintenance lane closures, monitor alerts, and accept or manually override system-generated response plans as necessary

  • Dispatch and communicate with Road Rangers and other incident response personnel via radio or phone, following established protocols

  • Provide clear and accurate information and/or directions to Road Rangers and other incident responders dispatched to various traffic incidents

  • Communicate with the appropriate local agencies, authorities, FDOT maintenance personnel, contractors, and wrecker companies in the management and safe, quick clearance of traffic incidents

  • Adhere to TMC Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG), manuals and other provided reference materials

  • Answer phones to provide information or assistance to motorists, FDOT personnel, or other agencies on traffic and roadway conditions; direct calls to designated personnel or take appropriate action

  • Monitor weather conditions for potential problems affecting traffic; make necessary communication to stakeholders and take appropriate action.

  • Perform equipment checks, data gathering, and updating of manuals and contact lists

  • Perform all duties with the highest level of customer service meeting or exceeding expectations and performance measures.

  • Use radio, phone, push-to-talk, and/or interoperability systems to communicate with law enforcement, fire/rescue departments, wrecker services, maintenance, contractors, etc. to provide clear and accurate information regarding incidents and the required response

  • Adhere to proper radio protocols

  • Use professional communications skills in preparing or completing written records in clear, concise sentences that include all pertinent information

  • Receive on the job training relating to traffic signal timing and implementation of timing plans

  • Opportunities for cross-training in traffic incident management, contract management, public information, field operations for traffic signals/arterial operations, and other TSM&O (Transportation Systems Management and Operations) functions

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Experience in public safety

  • Must pass FDLE criminal history and background check

  • Physically able, with or without accommodations, to work in an office environment. Position requires often performing keyboard/mouse operations and standing or sitting for long periods of time; occasionally standing/walking; rarely climbing stairs. Position may include wearing a dispatch headset, viewing CCTV camera displays, and listening to emergency responder radio broadcasts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Geographic familiarity with Central Florida roadways

  • Effective oral and written communications skills for in-person, radio, and phone conversations

  • Experience in TMC operations, traffic signal timing, or arterial management

  • Safety oriented and a sense of urgency in performing required duties

  • Have a customer service focused attitude

  • Ability to work calmly and accurately under intense pressure

  • Flexible schedule (relates to a 24/7/365 operation)

  • Reliable and strong work ethic
