Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a highly talented and hardworking Geologist for employment in the Oakland, CA office. The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an established career in Environmental Remediation, specific to subsurface investigations and remediation. AECOM is proud to provide our employees with exciting, challenging projects. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys planning and implementing field work and report writing. This position will work under supervision of Senior Environmental Professionals but is expected to manage tasks with limited direction. The successful candidate will also assist in implementing and overseeing AECOM behavior-based Health & Safety programs. This position requires a person to be able to conduct field work 40-60% a month. Field work includes travelling to Bay Area client sites and beyond.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Working within a team of technical experts and leading teams to successful outcomes to meet clients’ needs

  • Supervises and directs surface and subsurface investigations that employ soil borings, test pits, well installations, well destructions, soil, groundwater, and vapor sampling, aquifer testing, and surface geophysical surveys.

  • Examines and describes soil samples and interprets geologic and hydrogeologicconditions

  • Interprets data, prepares work plans, and technical reports

  • Performs subsurface drilling investigations to determine the presence and extent of impacts in soil and groundwater, as vapor in soil pore-space matrices

  • Typically collects multimedia samples for field and laboratory testing

  • Performs field investigations that include surface reconnaissance, surface mapping, surface water measurements and sampling, drilling, trenching, and excavation work

  • Assists in performance of hydraulic tests to support hydrogeologic analysis in support of water resource projects and environmental remediation system design (including groundwater recovery and treatment, de-watering, and hydraulic containment)

  • Works on complex and challenging projects with little senior assistance

  • Assesses the feasibility and soundness of proposed scientific evaluations, tests, products or equipment when necessary data are insufficient or confirmation by testing is advisable

  • Plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of the scientific work in a part of a major project or small-moderate scope project

  • Drafts reports on the above activities.

  • Data entry

  • Completes peer review of deliverables, including tables, text and figures

  • Mentors junior-level staff

  • Ensures the safety of AECOM field personnel and contractors under their supervision

  • Proactive in recognizing and appropriately addressing health and safety issues for entire team

Minimum Requirements

BA/BS + 4 YORE or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology or other related discipline (e.g., Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Geochemistry, Environmental Geology, Engineering Geology, etc.)

  • 3+ years’ experience in environmental assessment and remediation or demonstrated equivalent combination of education, skills, knowledge, abilities and experience, 5+ years preferred.

  • Proven skills in lithologic logging, soil, groundwater, and vapor sample collection, geological drilling methods, and analytical data analysis

  • Excellent writing skills and to convey complex thoughts and ideas in a clear, concise manner.

  • Proficiency in standard office suite software applications.

  • Strong background in behavior-based safety culture and acts accordingly.

  • Experience preparing work plans and reports

  • Ability to learn through on-the-job experience.

  • Ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 30 lbs

  • Ability to have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions

  • Will require completing training for Hazwoper OSHA 40-hr certification (previous certification is a plus)

  • Will require enrollment in the medical monitoring program requiring initial and annual physicals and initial and random drug screens

  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test

  • Valid US driver's license with a good driving record and the ability to travel and drive regularly, often long distances
