Job Summary

AECOM is seeking an Entry Level Electrical Staff Engineer for employment in the Oakland, CA office location. The candidate will have experience in the design of electrical power system on various industrial and commercial projects in the transportation group. Candidate should have some experience in the electrical design of power distribution system using national electrical code for safety of personnel and equipment. Such design consist of HVAC system, fire alarms, lighting, power supply to building auxiliary equipment for specific design. This electrical engineer will work under guidance of experienced engineer to produce drawings. Candidate should be experienced in AutoCAD in order to understand engineering software programs for performing engineering calculations. Must be willing to learn power system study software programs such as SKM software for load flow, short circuit and ground grid design and analysis. For software learning experience candidate must understand power supply one line diagrams, cable impedances, motors, generators, transformers impedances and proper meaning of the electrical equipment. Next high level will need to have understanding of DC power supplies AC to DC conversion equipment and their characteristics.

Will be assigned to work on variety of projects within the electrical engineering group. Candidate must be capable of understanding electrical equipment layouts with input from the senior engineer.

Specific duties will include detailed design of electrical power distribution system and physical layouts, power system one line diagrams, panel schedules, conduit and cable plans, conduit and cable schedules. Conduit sizes based upon % fill area required by NEC NFPA 70 (NEC Code) used in the industry. Using NEC code for required equipment layout and safe working clearances and equipment enclosure grounding and bonding for safety is essential.

Equipment layout inside building, lighting design, HVAC ventilation and fire alarm and protection system. Coordination with structural, civil, architects and utility incoming transmission line, and development of coordination steps for equipment layout and coordination design. Engineer should be able to make innovation design of fitting the equipment in limited spaces for the existing space limitations for new equipment.

Engineer should be able to work with others as a team member for efficient design package consisting of plans and specifications. Engineer should be able to work with minimum guidance from senior level technical lead in the electrical group. This position will be based in our Oakland office.

Under the responsible charge of a Professional Engineer:

  • Under minimal direction, completes engineering design drawings using AutoCAD program.

  • With minimum guidance completes conduit and cable schedules

  • with some input completes material take off quantities for engineers cost estimation to be performed by cost estimation professional

  • Will perform engineering calculations under the guidance of an experienced electrical engineer using industry in house software programs

  • Must be able to work with others in a team environment

  • Must be capable of understanding other disciplines that interface in the design of electrical system for the project.

  • Should understand impact of project changes and changes in the design criteria to make changes in electrical plans and associated changes affecting the project construction cost.

  • Builds productive relationships with in-house professionals with full understanding of company business

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from a 4-year accredited college or university.

  • Willing to appear in examination to obtain EIT examination followed by PE License once getting 2 years work experience

  • Must have taken power system courses to understand electrical power.

  • Relocation and per diem support are not available for this position

  • This position does not include sponsorship for United States work authorization

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1+ years' experience in electrical engineering/design of power distribution system, physical design, equipment layout, lighting design and control panels schedules

  • Classes in AutoCAD or actual design within 1 year design experience with other company.

  • Familiar with the National Electrical Code NEC NFPA 70, National Electric Safety Code and NESC C2 Requirements.
