AECOM is seeking a Consultant to be based at our Nottingham office. This role will expand and strengthen our busy team of ecologists in Central England and also work closely with our wider UK teams in environment and planning, landscape, and environmental economics, promoting collaboration between these disciplines in the context of sustainable development.
Our UK Ecology Team comprises over 100 ecologists based across the UK and covers terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats. We provide our clients with the full range of ecological services including specialist habitat and species surveys, impact assessment, advice on biodiversity mitigation, offsetting and enhancement, and management planning for biodiversity. Our projects include high profile major transport and other infrastructure, conventional and renewable power development as well as other industrial, commercial and residential development projects.
The role requires knowledge and experience in biodiversity and green infrastructure planning, biodiversity net gain (including offsets), ecosystem services and natural capital, especially in relation to land-use and planning in the UK for infrastructure, commercial, power and other development projects.
This Consultant will have the opportunity to work across the UK and Ireland on high profile, challenging and innovative projects.
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and organised, with a history of successfully working in a consultancy environment (or similar) including; through client liaison, within multi-disciplinary teams and completion of projects to a high standard, on time and within budgets.
The successful Consultant will be able to work independently, be resourceful and take initiative. Excellent analytical and communication skills are essential, in addition to a sound technical knowledge.
Working as part of the existing network of AECOM ecologists and forming a key link with our wider environment and planning teams and environmental economists in relation to green infrastructure, biodiversity net gain, ecosystem services and natural capital;
Supporting internal clients with assistance in the winning, delivery and management of the ecological requirements within multi-disciplinary tenders and projects;
Working independently, or with other ecologists and professionals, in the planning, delivery and management of impact assessment, the design and implementation of successful mitigation and compensation strategies for biodiversity, including approaches for delivering green infrastructure and net gain;
Assisting with managing the technical and financial performance of ecological and Environmental Impact Assessment projects;
Building and maintaining both internal and external client relationships, including providing response and / or advice in person, by email or over the phone in accordance with deadlines;
Communicating effectively with their line manager, project managers, clients, project teams and other members of the team, within projects and with clients by telephone, e-mail, letters and reports;
Developing and promoting best practice and innovation across the ecology business;
Compliance with internal business management procedures, including in relation to health and safety and technical quality of all advice and outputs; and development of the team to support wider environmental business goals, as required.
The successful candidate will have:
have a thorough understanding and working knowledge of the planning system in the UK, and of current position with respect to policy and legislation relating to biodiversity, green infrastructure and emerging approaches for the assessment of ecosystem services, biodiversity net loss/gain, and natural capital;
Experience within a consultancy environment (or similar) in providing advice to clients and colleagues on the benefits and importance of biodiversity, green infrastructure, natural capital and ecosystem services
Experience in the design and/or construction management on major infrastructure (particularly rail and road) projects in the UK.
Experience of influencing projects to deliver environmental outcomes, through engagement with project teams, clients and external stakeholders
Demonstrable experience of technical and professional proficiency, evidenced by input to the delivery of projects to a high standard, on time and within budgets;
have a proven track record of providing biodiversity inputs to assessments, in accordance with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) guidelines
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in particular the ability to use clear and appropriate language, communication styles and techniques that engage project team, clients and stakeholders
Excellent organisational skills, ability to manage own time, prioritise competing deadlines and maintain a sustainable work life balance
Experience of working to create a positive team culture.
Experience of suggesting ideas and innovations to continuously improve your work of project teams
A track record in, or aspirations for, continuing professional development and mentoring of junior ecologists.
A professional membership (CIEEM, IEMA or equivalent)
- Hold a recognised degree in an environmental or related discipline;
