AECOM Senior Mechanical Designer - HVAC in Norfolk, Virginia

Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer - HVAC to be based in Norfolk, Virginia. The Senior Mechanical Designer should be capable of working independently with limited supervision to complete small and large project design requirements for new facilities and renovation, modernization, and repurposing of existing buildings. The candidate must be well organized, able to demonstrate critical thinking, quickly recognize issues, and be part of the solution.

The candidate will also be expected to:

  • Perform a variety of tasks in support of the engineering staff.

  • Activities may include assisting with engineering calculations, setting up and operating equipment, inspecting equipment and engineering installations for compliance with specifications, and maintaining project documentation.

  • General understanding of procedures and company policies to achieve set results and deadlines. Viewed as competent in all areas. Highest non-supervisory position.

  • May oversee work of junior-level technicians. Viewed as competent in all areas.

  • Be self-motivated with a strong work ethic

  • Take pride in and ownership of your work

  • Concisely express complex system solutions in very early design phases

  • Be proficient in all aspects of mechanical systems design for projects of all sizes

  • Evaluate, select, apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and judgment based on experience to design HVAC systems in buildings

  • Coordinate HVAC systems with other disciplines

  • Make major design decisions and recommendations with little input from senior staff

  • Maintain accurate project documentation and design data for permanent project files

  • Act as an adviser and review correspondence prepared by junior project team members

  • Assist with mentoring of junior staff

  • Attend project meetings, both internal and with clients

  • Assist in project quality control review

  • Review and approve shop drawings, respond to RFI’s, and other construction admin related tasks

  • Be capable of working on multiple projects concurrently

  • Possesses good interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.

Minimum Requirements

  • H.S. 6+ years of relevant experience, which includes experience and skills in mechanical systems design for buildings

  • U.S. citizenship is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8+ years of relevant experience

  • Full understanding and ability to complete and coordinate project design assignments with the ability to review team member’s work for quality and recognition of training requirements

  • Experience with building HVAC systems including but not limited to chilled water, hot water, condenser water, steam, and air-side systems

  • Experience with sustainable design and energy efficiency

  • Knowledge/experience with building plumbing systems design

  • Experience with Design-Build projects

  • Experience with U.S. Department of Defense agency requirements (UFCs, SpecsIntact, etc.)

  • Successfully performed the role of lead designer on various projects

  • AutoCAD and Revit experience:
