AECOM Environmental Scientist III in Norfolk, Virginia

Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Environmental Scientist III for immediate employment at the AECOM Norfolk, VA office.

The duties and responsibilities of this job include but are not limited to:

  • Scheduling and safely implementing field tasks and reporting on time and within budget

  • Conducting site inspections for environmental compliance and providing recommendations for corrective actions

  • Performing Phase I/II Environmental Site Assessments, Wetland Delineations, ESC inspections, and/or providing technical multi-media environmental support for compliance with applicable regulations, permits, and plans

  • Preparing technical reports to document field activities, analytical results, and recommendations

  • Communicating effectively with Client, Project Manager, and construction contractors

  • Utilizes scientific principles, theories, practices and existing technologies to develop technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.

  • Requires general familiarity within a broad field of scientific knowledge of reciprocal effects of the work upon other disciplines/fields.

  • Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance.

  • Works under only general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions.

  • Solves problems by use of combinations of standard procedures, modifications of standard procedures or methods developed in previous assignments.

  • Participates in planning required to achieve prescribed objectives.

  • Conducts analysis and investigation work obtained from a variety of sources.

  • Performs inspections and tests to ensure compliance.

  • Participates in developing corrective measures and procedures. Formulates hypothesis, performs research and makes recommendation.

Minimum Requirements

  • B.S. degree or higher education in Environmental Science, Geology, or Chemistry

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe, and Microsoft applications

  • 5+ years progressively responsible experience in environmental science/consulting role

  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and requirements

  • Working knowledge of Virginia Stormwater Management Program Construction Storm Water General Permit and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP);

  • Knowledge of Land Disturbance/Grading Permits including Erosion & Sediment Control Plans;

  • Experience with Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) VWP Permit for Stream and Wetland impacts;Corps of Engineers Section 404 Permit for Stream and Wetland impacts;

  • Knowledge of Conditional Use or Special Use Permits;

  • Experience with Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans;

  • Experience in Emergency Planning Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA) – Tier I/II reporting requirements;Clean Water Act (CWA) requirements;

  • Knowledge of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) – Solid and Hazardous Waste;

  • Ability to research and interpret applicable laws and regulations applicable to a specific site or situation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector and/or Stormwater Inspector Certification

  • HAZWOPER 40-hr and current 8-hr Refresher Training

  • OSHA 10-hr Construction training
