Job Description

AECOM is currently seeking an experienced Environmental Technician for employment in Niagara Falls, NY. In this full-time role as an AECOM Field Services (AFS) employee, you will primarily work with the Project Manager and Technical Lead to support remedial operations, maintenance, and monitoring projects at client facilities.

The successful candidate will ideally have experience in general operations and environmental remediation/sampling. Hands-on mechanical experience and interests are preferred (e.g., construction, pump maintenance, pipe assembly, and instrumentation calibrations). Typical projects include groundwater treatment systems (pump and treat through air strippers or granular activated carbon), soil remediation (in situ and ex situ), oversee construction of pipe support buildings/facilities, groundwater and soil sampling, and wastewater treatment. Knowledge of New York State Chemical Bulk Storage regulations, Hazardous Waste RCRA & DOT regulations, Sewer Permitting, and Mechanical Integrity inspections are preferred, as is a chemistry/analytical lab background.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Routine fieldwork (such as environmental multi-media sampling, operations, maintenance, and inspection of groundwater treatment equipment) working under close supervision and at times alone.

  • Routine tasks in support of various project staff (administrative assistant, other Environmental Technicians in the group, and scientists from an outside hydrogeology consulting company).

  • Applying knowledge of or aptitude with process control systems, pneumatics, or 4-20mA instrumentation, flow metering, general hydrogeology implications of aquifer (water level) set points.

  • Sampling groundwater Influent and Effluent from groundwater treatment systems primarily for volatile organic compounds and semi-volatile compounds. Preparing chains-of-custody and sample cooler loading in preparation for transport to contracted analytical laboratories.

  • Gathering and maintaining specified records of scientific data for the technical lead/supervisor, including environmental sampling, operations and maintenance, and inspections at client sites.

  • Performing various operations and maintenance activities associated with remediation systems involving extraction of chlorinated hydrocarbons and impacted vapor and groundwater, performing recovery system maintenance as needed, groundwater monitoring, and compilation of field data.

  • Assisting with calculations, setting up and operating equipment (sampling devices and pumps), inspecting equipment and installations for compliance with specifications and maintaining proper project documentation.

  • Overseeing and working in collaboration with client mechanical, electrical, and industrial contractors.

  • Collecting and entering field data and applying technical principles and theories under supervision.

  • Driving AECOM-leased site vehicles.

  • Maintaining OSHA 1910.120 40-hour hazardous site worker certification, and RCRA/DOT certifications for field work.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Must possess a High School Diploma (or GED).

  • Must have 4+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency.

  • Valid US driver’s license. Must be able to pass AECOM's Motor Vehicle Records review. Position requires driving AECOM vehicles.

  • Physically able, with or without an accommodation, to work in indoor and outdoor environments (i.e., chemical and water treatment plants) with uneven terrain and in variable environmental conditions including heat, cold, and chemicals.

  • Frequent keyboard/mouse operations to use a process control system.

  • Frequent standing/walking through process and chemical areas to take readings, do calibrations, collect samples.

  • Occasional work with arms above shoulder level, operate vehicles, repetitive or fine hand movements to twist cables, remove well covers.

  • Rarely work at heights, using portable ladders, climbing stairs (up to 30 ft.), to perform inspection or maintenance.

  • Often work in an environment of heavy, moving, dangerous equipment.

  • Work (on occasion) alone in isolated/remote areas.

  • Perform repetitive bending/stooping to read meters, collect ground water samples, etc.

  • Occasional use of power gripping/squeezing hand tools and levers to perform mechanical inspections.

  • Lift 25-75 pounds pulling hoses, well pumps, use drum pallet-mover, move items 20 ft in distance.

  • Position will include wearing associated personal protective equipment, including but not limited to gloves, safety glasses/goggles, face shield, safety shoes/boots, hard hat, hearing and respiratory protection.

  • Due to the nature of this role, US citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Mechanical aptitude and hands-on skills to operate groundwater treatment equipment.

  • Associate degree or college course education in engineering, chemistry or other sciences.

  • Experience with various media sampling (soil, groundwater, and waste).

  • Experience with health and safety programs, and effective communication skills (verbal, field notes, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).

  • Advanced or current 8-hr. refresher OSHA 1910.120 40-hour Training.

  • Offered rate of compensation (New York) will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience and work location. The salary range for the position is $18.58/HR - $32.52/HR (non-exempt).
