Job Summary
Our Newcastle based Highways team currently has vacancies for extensively experienced Principal Highway Engineers. We expect the candidates to be Chartered Civil Engineers or Incorporated Civil Engineers through a recognized Institution. The successful candidates will take responsibility in all aspects of highway design to work on local, national and international schemes from our Newcastle Office. For this Principal grade we require people who have gained team management skills who will provide the necessary highways technical experience and mentoring to other team members. The successful candidates will join AECOM’s established highways business which continues to expand following several major project wins. The successful candidate will have demonstrable highways experience, show both technical and leadership qualities and have experience of major/ minor highways design. For those appointed at a Principal level we expect those people to work closely with our clients and take responsibility for delivering quality products to strict financial and programme targets.
The highways business in the North East represents over 40 years of accumulated skills, experience and established culture in the delivery of all types of highway schemes; from major motorway improvements such as the A1 Dishforth to Barton Improvement scheme to major highways such as Morpeth Northern Bypass, New Tyne Crossing, Smart Motorway Projects (SMP) and challenging junction improvements on the strategic highway network. Our modern offices on Newcastle Quayside have good transport links and the teams have an established reputation for quality and delivery. We are looking to enhance and enlarge these teams with people who have a sound technical background and share our enthusiasm and determination.
The team is highly successful and our workload is growing providing opportunities to be involved in a number of major highways schemes. We are currently delivering major highways and infrastructure projects for high profile clients across the UK. To help us to achieve our ambitions we are seeking individuals who have a sound technical background and share our enthusiasm and determination to deliver successful projects.
Projects we are currently working on include: A1 Doncaster to Darrington, M1/M62 Lofthouse, M11 Junction 7A, HS2, SMP J21a-J26, and A1 J47. Our services offered to our clients include the full range and scope of highways work from inception to completion across all the key discipline areas. We work on schemes from feasibility stage through the development phase and planning and DCO process, preliminary design, detailed design and site supervision.
We have considerable experience of working with contractors on Design and Build schemes such as the A1 Leeming to Barton, SMP and the Morpeth Northern Bypass as well as working directly for clients, who come from the private and public sector.
Minimum Requirements
Produce technical design information including, drawings and specifications
Demonstrate a broad technical understanding across a range of highways disciplines including drainage, geotechnics, pavements and structures, and the ability to seek specialist advice when required
Provide technical input and leadership in the field of highway engineering
Ensure compliance with all relevant technical standards
Identify and manage project risks
Deliver specified project outcomes on time, within budget and to the quality required
Manage the workload, technical management and oversight of a design team
Write and oversee the preparation of contract documents and technical reports
Coach and mentor junior staff
Assess staff requirements at each stage of the project
Prepare resource plans, delivery programs, and fee proposals
Undertake Health and Safety duties including ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for the design team and fulfilling responsibilities for safety in design
Build and maintain excellent client relationships
Undertake business development activities and secure opportunities with new and existing clients.
Preferred Qualifications
BSc, BEng, or higher degree in Civil Engineering
Site experience during construction
Understanding/experience of 3d design modelling
Experience of working within common data environments
