Head of Health & Safety, Civil Infrastructure

Job Summary

Reporting to the MD of Civil Infrastructure (Europe), with a functional reporting line to the Europe SH&E Director, this key individual will partner with regional leadership to enable the design, implementation, communication, and coordination of all SH&E initiatives within CI in the UKI and liaison with Europe SH&E Country Managers. This will involve supporting and projects (site and office) across the Region, ensure adequate coverage across all operating jurisdictions and managing /monitoring compliance with company and local safety regulations across AECOM operations.

Role Responsibilities

  • Undertake regular reviews of the implementation of SHE Processes within Civil Infrastructure and identity areas for improvement.

  • Engagement with the Safety Leads with the CI Sectors (Rail, Road, Ports, Power, Water) to support strategy development

  • Develop and promote a SHE Strategy for CI, aligned to the Europe SHE Strategy and with support from the Europe SH&E Director.

  • Develop and maintain End Market Operational Plans

  • Work with local leadership to ensure risks are identified and addressed

  • Maintain end market engagement with the Europe & India SH&E dashboard, identify trends and implement changes where required.

  • Maintain the performance of SMA and Observation completion across Grades within CI

  • Drive Safety Leadership at all levels within CI

  • Attend relevant Professional Development Conferences

  • Assist the wider Europe SH&E team and end markets in the development of a suitable core and CI specific training taking into consideration various client and regulatory requirements and where needed implement initiatives and training to ensure targets are met in accordance with local and global core value metrics.

  • Maintain programs to manage data quality associated with monthly reporting. This includes management of IndustrySafe and Lifeguard systems for quality control and timely closure of incidents, observations and associated corrective actions.

  • Seek to establish appropriate forums to regularly engage with senior leadership on SH&E e.g., Safety Leadership Team (SLT)

  • Ensure serious incidents and near misses are escalated to both Regional and Functional leadership (under the direction of legal counsel) in a timely manner, and that investigations are performed for any high potential events, assisting to facilitate an executive incident review where required. Ensure that relevant safety alerts or lessons learned are shared across the Europe region and with other global colleagues to assist in preventing future incidents.

  • Establish a local audit and inspection schedule to maintain visibility for SH&E program across project operations, ensuring associated corrective actions are assigned to appropriate parties and closed in a timely manner.

  • Work with the Regional BL leads and CAM/SAMs to understand their resourcing needs and ensure adequate resources are available to assist with key CI pursuits, working to ensure they understand AECOM’s SH&E systems, capabilities and work with preferred suppliers/HR to source local talent to ensure key hires are prioritised.

Minimum Requirements

  • Significant experience spent in a safety leadership position.

  • Leadership

  • Experience in the Health and Safety field within civil infrastructure. Working with key stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading and driving teams

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field e.g. OH&S, Science etc.

  • Experience working in a variety of technical areas including management and design engineering and/or building engineering industries with a multi-national, multi-disciplined firm is highly desirable.

  • Communication and training skills and experience are critical.

  • Professional Membership with related safety organisation (desired).
