Job Summary

We are seeking a Traffic Management Center Operator, Columbia, SC, one of several of our Traffic Management Centers. Operators are responsible for monitoring the roadways, including detecting, confirming, and responding to scheduled and unscheduled traffic events and congestion according to established policies and procedures.

This role makes a real difference to the traveling public through the execution of real-time traffic management plans over the course of traffic events that help to keep the public informed and reduce the duration of stressful traffic conditions.

By monitoring and processing information from closed circuit television cameras (CCTV), roadway detection systems, and radio communications, this role builds a picture of what is impacting the roadways and allows the operator to dispatch the appropriate response in keeping with published technical operating protocols.

Operators find that prior experience in a police/fire or transportation dispatch or call center environment is helpful, but is not always necessary should the operator have strong communication and computer skills, along with a strong work ethic, and being mission oriented. Knowledge of the Myrtle Beach landmarks and cross streets will also aid success in this role.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma and equivalent experience

  • Knowledge of personal computers and software, with a particular emphasis on Graphical User Interface applications, e.g., Microsoft Windows, MS Office

  • Working knowledge of the municipality and area traffic management organizations, including state, metro and local emergency services

  • Ability and Flexibility to work a variety of shifts

  • Ability to work calmly and accurately under intense pressure

  • Knowledge of metropolitan roadways including their alternate names, the jurisdiction they are located, where the jurisdiction changes, and alternate routes that are available

  • Ability to synthesize information from multiple, diverse and simultaneous inputs, including automated road sensor data, 2-way radios, CCTV cameras, and computer databases
