AECOM Environmental Chemist III in Morrisville, North Carolina

Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Environmental Chemist for immediate employment in the Morrisville, NC office. Please note this is an office position and would not involve laboratory analysis. The project chemist will support quality assurance/quality control, data management, and various analytical chemistry aspects of environmental investigations for our clients. The new hire will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, developing their technical skills as a chemist while exploring new interests as well.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide defensible scientific support for critical project decisions.

  • Support and direct junior staff for data validation efforts

  • Develop project Work Plans and Quality Assurance Project Plans

  • Review and validate chemical data packages in accordance with EPA guidance to ensure compliance with published analytical methods and usability of environmental data

  • Upload laboratory analytical data to specific client and regulatory databases

  • Manage data in relational database systems like Earthsoft EQuIS or Microsoft Access

  • Manipulate electronic data deliverables to create report-ready tables and visualizations

  • Develop new data management workflows and automated tools

  • Provide guidance on selection of analyte lists, appropriate analytical methods, and investigative approaches

  • Serve as day-to-day coordinator between field personnel and analytical laboratories to track shipping and receipt of chemical samples and resolve chain-of-custody issues

  • Work with Project Managers to develop and solicit bids from analytical laboratories in support of project planning and proposal efforts.

  • Prepare technical memoranda and white papers to be included in client deliverables

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or other related discipline and or demonstrated equivalency of experience and education

  • 4 years of experience performing data validation as an environmental chemist

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with and knowledge of standard EPA analytical methods detailed in SW846 and other EPA methods and an understanding of data validation in accordance with EPA protocols

  • Knowledge of environmental chemistry principles (i.e. environmental fate and transport)

  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry principles (i.e. quality assurance and quality control)

  • Experience using relational databases such as Microsoft Access

  • Experience using Earthsoft EQuIS Professional

  • Basic knowledge of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) and the unique challenge this group of compounds poses to the environment.

  • Relevant technical writing experience

  • Ability to organize data in an efficient and clear manner
