Job Summary

AECOM’s Transit and Rail Signals group is seeking an enthusiastic Communication Specialist to join our team of over 300 railway specialists. Working out of our Mississauga Commerce office, the assignment is mostly in the GTA, but future assignments might include remote or semi remote locations in Northern Ontario or sites in Eastern Ontario. Reporting to the Senior Manager Signals and Communications, the candidate will deliver railway infrastructure projects, Signal and Communications Contracts focusing on reviewing and providing oversight for all aspect for Communication applications

The role includes reviews with project designers and contractors to ensure that procedures are followed and that contractors are in compliance with project plans, contracts and specifications.

Role Details:

  • North American heavy-rail freight and passenger systems to AREMA C&S standards.

  • LRT and Subway transit systems.

  • Complete design reviews.

  • Review Contractor Work Plan Methodologies (WPM) and Communications test plans.

  • Oversee Contractors while signal works and testing are being completed in the shop or field.

  • Prepare technical specifications for traditional design-bid-build and P3 / Alternative Design and Procurement / design-build projects.

  • Know and meet clients’ expectations for all Communications works including testing.

  • Produce reports for clients.

  • Follow all safety regulations and AECOM procedures including safety observations..

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma

  • Electronics/Communications training at a recognized Community College or equivalent training.

  • Minimum four (four) years’ experience in Communications and/or electronics environment, IP networking, Telephone/intercom systems, Wireless data communications, Voice radio including Simplex and Trunk Systems.

  • Experience writing technical specifications.

  • Experience working in a Communication Wiring Facility or on Field Construction Crew as a leader or above.

  • Ability to prepare, understand, interpret Contracts to review work or submittals and answer RFI’s.

  • Must be able to assist with the planning of Communications works from the existing infrastructure through to implementation of the final design and be able to communicate phasing plan to designers, contractors and internal & external clients.

  • Keen desire to learn new skills, excellent teamwork attitude but must be able to work solo as well.

  • Must be able to prepare daily detailed reports and provide to the Client and AECOM project team.

  • Fluent in reading, writing and communicating in English.

  • General computer skills are required, must be proficient with MS Outlook 365, Excel and Word.

  • Valid Driver’s license and personal vehicle are required for this position

Preferred Qualifications

  • P.Eng licensed in the Province of Ontario.

  • Experience with Railroad Communications including Metrolinx, TTC, CN, CP, VIA Rail, AMT or similar.

  • Strong understanding of CN and CP Communications work processes and Standards.

  • Experience with LRT and/or subway Communications systems.

  • Management or leadership experience.

  • Experience delivering Communications design and/or specifications for P3 / AFP / Design-Build (includes preparing PSOS and RCD documents).

  • 5-10 years’ experience with Communications testing/commissioning, construction, maintenance, and/or operations.

  • Multi-disciplinary transit/rail “Systems” experience including traction-power, OCS, communications, power supply / electrical, SCADA, fare collection, etc.

  • Understanding of Industry Canada frequency allocation plan, Antennas, coaxial cable and RF connectors, Distributed Antenna Systems ( DAS ),CCTV including cameras, cable and video recorders, etc.
