Job Description

AECOM Buildings + Places is seeking a Director of Operations.

Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer and working closely with the Regional Business Line Leader for Buildings + Places (B+P), the Director of Operations is responsible for planning and directing operations for the B+P business line in Canada Region providing operational, project delivery, and technical leadership which includes: project management and delivery, technical excellence, client satisfaction, quality, safety, resource allocation, and employee development and training.

Listing of essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Working with the RBLL in identifying, development and implementing B+P Canada’s objectives and strategies, setting up KPIs , guidelines and targets.

  • Provide a broad business perspective and be a constructive participant in the overall management of the BL.

  • Working with the Operations Managers in the identification, establishment and implementation of office strategies to maximize NSR, EBITA and secure cash flow.

  • To provide guidance, direction and support to the Ops Managers on the performance of their duties.

  • Overseeing financial tools necessary to monitor anticipated and actual business operations, identifying operational opportunities concerns and projections.

  • Partner with Finance to monitor project delivery performance toward ensuring that annual financial goals and operational excellence is achieved.

  • Actively contribute to win strategies and successful project execution, being involved at a ‘Hands -On’ level in key pursuits as needed and on projects should issues impacting client satisfaction or project management best practices escalate.

  • Represent the BL through attendance at key industry and community events.

  • Support and drive corporate and BL initiatives and policies.

  • Ensuring corporate and BL compliance with H&S, Ethics, etc.

  • Analyzes operational performance for every market sector within the regional Business Line and proactively identifies areas of improvement; this includes analyzing key KPIs such as utilization, gross margin, SG&A, EBITA and DSO.

  • Collaborates with all disciplines in the Region on delivery of business plans.

  • Works with business unit leaders and finance and accounting to forecast volume of work and identify deviations from plan/outlook.

  • Provides the Leadership Team support in developing the annual budget and preparing the financial outlook and other financial performance forecasts.

  • Partnering with Finance/Project Controls to continuously improve operational excellence and acts in a leadership role to drive improvement.

  • Communicates with staff to ensure that all initiatives are delivered and executed in a positive and effective manner.

  • Responsible for project delivery and client service: project staffing, workload balancing, and technical work in accordance with client expectations, contract scope of work and budget, and to company, professional, quality, safety and legislative standards.

  • Core competencies in professional staff development, mentorship, and retention are critical. In an operations role, supports the continued growth and development of a professional environment for a creative enterprise, built on design and delivery excellence.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General:

Supports the Regional Business Line Leader (RBLL) for the business line and the COO for the region to effectively manage the operational and financial performance

Functional Knowledge:

Develops technical standards and implements best practices.

Acts as an advisor to clients and acts as an advisor to others on client expectations, project delivery, technical practice and business units. Serves as top advisor on projects of large scope and complexity.

Business Expertise:

Requires expertise in Operations and Project Delivery

Leadership:

Builds high performance, collaborative teams who demonstrate a strong focus on clients, a commitment to excellence and innovation, and strong employee engagement.

Impact of Position on the Business:

As a member of the regional operational leadership team, focuses on optimizing the overall performance of the region.

Interpersonal Skills:

Initiates and maintains extensive contacts with senior level region, business line and technical experts within the company and with other organizations and companies. Acts as an advisor to clients and acts as an advisor to others on client expectations, project delivery, technical practice and business units.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

In order to be considered for the position, candidates must have, at a minimum:

No less than a Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Interior Design, Building Engineering, Planning or related field and 12 years of relevant experience in the Design and Building industry, including 4 years of leadership experience.

Demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 15 years of increased supervisory, management and operational/financial experience. Industry related experience is essential.

  • Excellent supervisory and leadership skills, including strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Strong business acumen with the ability to identify, develop and plan business strategy efforts and analyzing business results based on a strong understanding of the AEC industry.

  • Proven ability to implement key initiatives in a manner which facilitates teamwork and goal attainment.

  • Experience in the Design and Building industry an asset

  • Proven delivery as Project Manager on large complex projects

  • Proven record of delivering work, managing teams, and development of a collaborative practice

  • Collaborative style; team player

  • Willingness to see opportunity and act

  • Ability to lead and be decisive; strategic mindset

  • Loves challenge

  • Proven financial and operational acumen
