Job Summary

AECOM’s Ontario Water & Natural Resources team is filling contract on call positions for Terrestrial Ecologists to support the construction of a large wind energy project in Central Ontario. Note that these are part-time variable positions, meaning work days and times will be determined on an as-needed basis.

This position will require individuals to work remotely in rugged terrain within central Ontario as part of a field crew. This is an exclusive field role and availability to work on site for long periods is required.

The appropriately qualified candidate will have 2+ years of experience conducting and leading terrestrial ecology field work as well as knowledge and experience in avian, reptile or bat ecology, identification, and impact assessments, and implementation of field protocols, be highly motivated and accountable, enjoy working outdoors, work well collaboratively with other team members, and be an effective communicator.

Individuals should have a background conducting biological inventories, including terrestrial wildlife habitat assessments and species inventories, and associated data analysis and reporting. Strong organizational skills, leadership skills, and an ability to work well on multi-disciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment are essential qualities.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Undertake wildlife screening surveys (including nest searches and area searches for SAR reptiles and bats) and species relocations as necessary

  • Oversee activities conducted in or near Suitable or Confirmed SAR Reptile Hibernacula habitat

  • Conduct routine daily monitoring and inspections to ensure compliance with environmental requirements (EA, Endangered Species Act, Species at Risk Act, Migratory Birds Convention Act, and Fisheries Act);

  • Monitor the implementation of mitigation and best management practices through observational and photographic monitoring

  • Implement contingency mitigation measures to address issues related to water quality changes, SAR mortality, and disturbance of SAR Reptile Hibernacula

  • Provide inputs to weekly mitigation and compliance monitoring summary reports

  • Work as part of small and large field crews under the direction of an Environmental Lead

  • Adhere to and enforce AECOM’s Health and Safety Protocols

Minimum Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in environmental science or biology, from a recognized University or College or equivalent.

  • 2+ years of related experience and training identifying flora and fauna of Ontario (e.g. plants, birds, amphibians, mammals, insects, fish, etc.)

  • Demonstrated experience conducting and leading teams for biological field work in southern and central Ontario

  • Experience with air photo interpretation (hard/soft copy), Global Positioning Systems, and map and compass orientation

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently

  • Ability to work in a field environment

  • Must possess a valid Ontario driver’s license

  • Valid Standard First Aid + CPR

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of related experience

  • Experience with construction environmental monitoring an asset

  • Experience with groundwater and surface water level monitoring an asset

  • Experience with air photo interpretation (hard/soft copy), Global Positioning Systems, and map and compass orientation

  • Completion of MNRF Ontario Reptile and Amphibian Survey Course

  • Wilderness First Aid and/or wilderness experience

  • Has access to a vehicle for getting to the work site

  • Valid MNRF Electrofishing Certificate
