Position Title Intermediate Aquatic Ecologist

AECOM’s Ontario Water & Natural Resources team is looking for an Aquatic Ecologist to support our existing projects and to grow our capacity to serve clients on challenging and exciting projects across the province. The position may be based out of our Guelph, Kitchener, Hamilton, Mississauga, Markham, Barrie, Sudbury, or London offices.
The appropriately qualified candidate will have 4+ years of experience in project coordination/project management, environmental permitting as well as conducting aquatic ecology data collection, reporting, permitting and monitoring. Taxonomic identification of Ontario freshwater fishes (including aquatic Species At Risk and invasive species), implementation of provincial protocols, Species at Risk permitting and experience in aquatic habitat restoration design and implementation are required. Knowledge and demonstrated experience in the design, installation and monitoring of Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) measures and protection of fish and aquatic habitat at construction sites is an asset. The applicant will be highly motivated and accountable, enjoy working outdoors, work well collaboratively with other team members, and have outstanding written and oral communication skills.
Individuals should have a background conducting fish species inventories, including electrofishing and other fish capture methods, aquatic habitat assessments, and associated data analysis and reporting. Individuals should have knowledge and experience working with environmental regulations: Fisheries Act, Endangered Species Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Conservation Authorities Act, etc. Preference will be given to candidates that are currently designed or hold the perquisite for immediate registration with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Registry, Appraisal and Qualification System (RAQs) for Fisheries Assessment and/or Fisheries Compliance Specialties.
Strong communication skills, organizational skills, leadership skills, and an ability to work well on multi-disciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment are essential qualities. The position will involve leading or supporting aquatic ecology investigations including field work in support of baseline studies, environmental impact assessments, Species at Risk permitting and mitigation plans, and related scopes of work. This position may offer motivated candidates an opportunity to develop the experience necessary to develop into a senior technical or staff supervisory role.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Project coordination to assist project manager’s and senior AECOM Ecology staff with successful completion of key project deliverables
Assist with business development (e.g. proposal writing)
Lead or support a field crew to undertake data collection and field investigations to document baseline aquatic ecology conditions according to study requirements in urban and remote sites in southern and central Ontario
Lead or support construction monitoring with an emphasis on ESC measures and protection of fish and aquatic habitat
Data entry, report writing, permit applications
Provide technical support to senior staff
Adhere to and enforce AECOM’s Health and Safety Protocols
This position may require individuals to work remotely in rugged terrain within southern and central Ontario for periods of time as part of field crews based on project locations.
Bachelor's degree or diploma in environmental science or biology, from a recognized University or College
4+ years of related experience
Strong technical capability in field and laboratory identification of aquatic biota of Ontario
Demonstrated experience conducting and leading teams for biological field work in southern and central Ontario
Demonstrated experience in project coordination/management and environmental permitting
Experience with air photo interpretation (hard/soft copy) and Global Positioning Systems
Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently
Ability to work in both field and office environments
Must possess a valid driver’s license
Valid RAQS-registration in any: Fisheries Assessment Specialist, Fisheries Compliance During Construction Specialist, Environmental Monitoring During Construction
MTO/DFO/OMNRF Fisheries Protocol Training
Valid CISEC certification
Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol (OSAP) certification
Mussel and/or Benthic invertebrates Identification course
Mussel relocation design and implementation experience
Water Quality sampling and interpretation
Pleasure Craft Operator certification
Master’s Degree in related field
Valid Standard First Aid + CPR
Experience writing and preparing technical reports
Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
Wilderness First Aid and/or wilderness experience
Has access to a vehicle for conducting field work
Fluency in written and spoken French is an asset
