Location

You can be based in any of our UK&I T&D locations spread across Aberdeen, Ashford, Basingstoke, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Croydon, Dublin, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Leeds, London Aldgate, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Plymouth, St Albans. If you are not located near a main office, we will consider a remote-working arrangement.

The Role

AECOM is recruiting for a Principal Protection & Control Engineer to join our growing Electricity Transmission & Distribution team. The focus of the team is large-scale HV grid infrastructure, grid connections, and private networks, particularly in projects where renewable energy, resilience, energy efficiency, and carbon reduction can support global efforts to combat climate change.  The team delivers management, design and supervision of electrical power projects at transmission and distribution voltages ranging from 132kV to 400kV.

The role requires P&C engineering knowledge and skills, with proven experience in the design and specification (including calculation of settings) of equipment used in electrical networks and renewable generation. 

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in working with transmission voltages 275kV/400kV and will probably have a consulting, utility, renewable generation or OEM background.

The work typically comes from:

  • Large projects and frameworks with transmission network operators mostly in UK and Ireland but also in Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East.

  • Client and owners engineer role on construction of HV infrastructure

  • Connections of renewable generation and hyperscale data centres

  • Internal AECOM clients delivering large industrial and electrification projects

Qualifications

Required/Essential Skills & Experience 

  • Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or transmission utility in the energy sector.

  • Extensive experience in P&C FEED or detailed design of high voltage installations (132kV to 400kV)

  • Experience designing the HV infrastructure across the full project lifecycle from feasibility to detailed design.

  • Good team player and have a client-focused mindset customer facing skills.

  • Ability to work flexibly across multiple projects.

Technical Aspects

  • Project Development/Pre-construction: Development of optimum cable routes considering length, thermal conditions, land use. Development of specifications with technology specific specialists and external project partners. Tender evaluations. Technical assessment and Design Assurance Design input to consenting team, converter, civil, marine. Participate in design meetings.

  • Tender: Tender specification development. Design assurance of tender return documentation. Design assurance during tender evaluation. Supplier meetings.

  • Construction: Design Assurance - Reviewing supplier technical designs. Manufacturing assurance audits that manufacturing is following technical design, attending FAT. Commissioning support - Fault resolution support

Desirable Skills & Experience 

  • Project management (incl. budget, time and quality).

  • Client facing experience

Preferred Qualifications :

Degree in Electrical Engineering.
