Job Information

AECOM Associate Director Passivhaus in Manchester, United Kingdom

United Kingdom - London, London - UK

Job Summary

AECOM is a global provider of services for the design and engineering of the built environment. AECOM recognises the climate emergency we find ourselves in and the important role we can play in delivering the change required to address global warming and provide climate resilient development.

In the UK the Government has committed to reducing our net carbon emissions to zero by 2050. This will require all new development to be designed for minimal net carbon emissions. AECOM’s UK&I business has committed to a Net Zero Carbon Initiative that includes setting internal targets to facilitate the zero-carbon transition for all AECOM’s Buildings and Places projects from 2025.

A significant factor identified during the development of our Net Zero Carbon Initiative is the need to reduce building energy demand to the levels recommended by the London Energy Transformation Initiative (LETI) Zero Carbon Design Guide and RIBA Zero Carbon Challenge. One of the most effective ways for consistently delivering buildings with energy demands equivalent to these targets is to design projects to the Passivhaus standard. It is recognised that meeting these standards requires a substantial shift in approach to design, procurement and construction. This needs to be carefully implemented and communicated through our different business lines to deliver change at scale and in the timeframes needed.

AECOM is seeking to appoint a Certified Passivhaus designer or consultant who has extensive experience in designing and delivering low energy building designs, that have been certified as meeting the Passivhaus standard. The appointed Passivhaus expert will help to build and lead AECOM’s Passivhaus services. They will work across and be supported by all our Buildings and Places disciplines but in particular M&E, Architecture, Sustainability and Cost Management. We expect candidates are likely to have either an architecture, building services or sustainable buildings background.

AECOM’s Sustainability teams are recognised as industry leaders in the field of sustainable development. Our projects range from working with Governments to support Building Regulations and National planning policy relating to climate change, to developing energy and sustainability strategies to support the design and planning of new development and the resilience of cities.

AECOM works across all construction stages, from pre-feasibility, through feasibility, design, construction and operation; and across a wide range of sectors - housing, healthcare, schools, universities, offices, retail, hospitality etc. We also deliver advice relating to existing building portfolios and city scale decarbonisation. Our work includes:

  • Climate Action Plans for local authorities, cities and businesses.

  • The development of policy on low carbon and renewable energy, climate change and sustainability issues at national, regional and local levels

  • Preparing industry-leading best practice guidance and policy advice for Government, GLA, RIBA and CIBSE

  • Sustainable masterplanning of new communities

  • Energy and zero carbon strategies for major new development

  • Design advice and feasibility studies for new build and refurbishment projects

  • Circular economy strategies and embodied carbon calculations

  • Research into reducing energy use, improving resilience to climate change and creating more sustainable buildings and places.

We are seeing an increasing demand for our consultancy services to assist building projects, organisations, cities and regions to develop strategies and action plans for achieving net zero emissions. Core to these services will be ensuring that for all projects where we have a design influence, they are designed to minimise energy demand, maximise renewable energy generation and to be comfortable for their users.

Your key responsibilities, with support from the team, will include the following:

  • Lead an AECOM initiative to promote and develop knowledge across the B&P business in the delivery of Passivhaus buildings

  • Share knowledge and experience of delivering Passivhaus with colleagues recently qualified as Passivhaus Designers or Consultants and with limited practical experience

  • Develop business process and structure to ensure appropriate Passivhaus design and certification quality control

  • Input to obtaining independent Certification by a relevant accreditation body of AECOM Passivhaus projects

  • Provide consultancy support to organisations (public and private sector) to develop carbon reduction and GHG emissions reduction strategies

  • Provide consultancy support to developers, building estate owners, local authorities, cities and regions to develop multi-sectoral strategies for achieving net zero

  • Writing proposals and winning new work

  • Building client relationships and delivering work

  • Presentations to clients and chairing meeting and workshops

  • Delivering high quality, clearly written outputs

  • Delegating work to junior staff and managing delivery

Minimum Requirements

  • An architectural, science, engineering or building-related degree; a building sustainability/energy related MSc is desirable

  • Qualified Passivhaus Designer or Consultant with experience of delivering certified Passivhaus homes and non-domestic buildings.

  • An ability to communicate effectively, be client-facing and able to write concise and clear reports

  • Have a good understanding of and interest in sustainable development issues as they relate to the built environment

  • A detailed understanding of practical approaches for cutting carbon emissions in buildings and the built environment

  • Experience of stakeholder engagement and stakeholder workshop facilitation

  • Experience in bidding for or supporting the winning of work

  • Experience in project and client management
