Associate Director – Economic Development

AECOM’s Economic Development practitioners have been instrumental in forging collaborations to reposition local economies, design master plans, execute regeneration strategies, create more sustainable environments, formulate comprehensive plans, produce and review business plans and adopt regulatory and financing strategies that enable effective implementation. We are adept at working in multidisciplinary teams.
We work at all scales – regional, rural, urban, community, district, and site. Working with our clients and their constituents, we position places to unlock opportunities that meet our client’s economic, environmental, and social goals.
Now part of AECOM’s new UK&I Urban Advisory business, the Economic Development team is one of the leading consultancy teams in the UK working on a wide range of economic development projects in the UK and overseas. Currently these include major projects such as the A303 Stonehenge Tunnel, High Speed 2, Crossrail 2 and Sutton Link Extension as well as a wide range of mixed use developments. We also complete numerous commissions for Local Enterprise Partnerships, Local Authorities and City Regions covering business case development, infrastructure and Enterprise Zone bids and the development of transport, economic, spatial and infrastructure strategies to drive economic growth and productivity improvements.
We are seeking experienced candidates with an interest in economic development and regeneration who can win work, successfully manage projects, and deliver consultancy support to the highest levels of client satisfaction.
Key duties include:
Responsibility for the winning and delivery of significant projects including:
Economic growth including sectoral and spatial strategies;
Socio-economic impact assessments of infrastructure and development schemes;
Business case development and appraisal;
Evidence base development through research and data analysis;
Evaluations of projects, programmes and policies to show impact and value for money
Leading on multi-disciplinary projects, drawing on technical expertise from across AECOM;
Leading on work winning by identifying and coordinating bids that successfully respond to client tenders and via proactive business development;
Undertaking all aspects of consultancy project delivery from project design through to management, delivery and client care;
Being proactive and client focused, understanding the needs of the project and offering high quality, professional advice;
Representing AECOM’s Economics Team at external events and internal business development initiatives.
Supporting the Regional Director in the day-to-day management of the Economics Team.
Delivery of Project Manager KPIs, including customer focus, project set up, communication & team management, risk management and quality, change control, commercial management, and safety health & environment;
Ownership of financial responsibilities with projects and assignments and expected to meet financial, marketing, and management goals; and
Line management responsibility for junior and graduate staff within the Economics Team.
A track record in economic development with some specialized areas. This could include land use planning and property development, transport and infrastructure projects, business support, employment and skills or inward investment.
A track record in delivery of complex consultancy projects.
Experience of maintaining strong client relations in order to generate consultancy work.
Detailed analytic and numerical skills supported by spreadsheet and other software skills
A track record of contributing to innovative economic development solutions and working across complex local, regional and national stakeholder relationships.
A highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills.
A team player who can work as part of wide project teams including other technical specialists.
Line management experience.
Clean driving license
- A degree in geography, economics, business or a related discipline and an MA/MSc/MBA/equivalent qualification in a similar field, or overall equivalent experience.
