AECOM is actively seeking highly motivated individuals to train and function as Coordinated Highway Assistance and Maintenance Program (CHAMP) Operators supporting the Georgia Department of Transportation's CHAMP program. CHAMP Operators play a key, critical role in safeguarding motorists traveling the interstates by ensuring roadways are clear of debris, reporting highway maintenance issues and assisting stranded motorists, among other duties.
These dynamic roles are ideal for individuals with a strong desire to help and demonstrated problem solving skills typically acquired with mechanical aptitude/training, experience/training as a Driver, experience/training as an emergency responder, military, GDOT and/or HERO Responder job experience.
The CHAMP Operator in this Part-time role covers routes and gaps in shifts created by absences.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Patrol and monitor a segment of interstate roadway in an assigned region, looking for stranded motorists, roadway deficiencies, site distance problems and obstructions that may cause lane blockage
Professionally and courteously assist the public with circumstances that have left them stranded, such as dead batteries, running out of gas, or flat tires.
Ensure compliance with all Federal, State, and Municipal laws, rules and ordinances
Monitor, report and document roadway deficiencies to Dispatch or District offices
High School Diploma and or equivalent certificate(GED)
Be a minimum of 21 years of age
Must pass a State and Federal criminal history/security and motor vehicle back ground checks; must also be able to pass yearly criminal and motor vehicle background checks
Possess a valid Georgia Class C License and a clean driving record, including no suspension of license in the last 5 years
Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and annual screening process per contractual requirements
Possess or be able and willing to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications
Must participate in and successfully complete a post-offer. pre-employment fitness for duty questionnaire
Working knowledge of basic automotive repair
Demonstrate positive customer service attitude - both to co-workers (internal customers) and Customers
Willingness to be on call 24/7 and respond to after-hours call outs
Physically able, with or without an accommodation, to work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain, variable outdoor conditions including heat, cold, moisture, dust, dryness, noise, and automotive-related chemicals (e.g., fuels, coolants, lubricants, etc.). Position requires frequent: operation of vehicles, lifting of less than 25 pounds, and work around heavy, moving, dangerous equipment; often standing/walking, repetitive bending & stooping. Position requires periodic: lifting of 25-75 pounds, working with arms above shoulder level, and power gripping/squeezing (hand tools, levers, etc.); and position requires occasional: work at heights, and work on electrical circuits; rare lifting of greater than 75 pounds, and stair climbing
Position will include wearing associated personal protective equipment
Due to the nature of this work, U.S. citizenship is required
Experience in working in roadway traffic environment
Basic knowledge of operations of emergency services
Basic knowledge of highway maintenance activities
Basic knowledge in minor auto repairs and automotive preventive maintenance
Ability to work independently with little supervision and manage own time
Demonstrated ability to reason and make good sound decisions based on narrowly defined criteria or guidelines
