Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Manager, Controversy and Planning to join our Corporate Tax team. As a key member of the Tax Planning Team, this is a dynamic position that provides critical support to the Tax Department as a whole. The position encompasses supporting the VP and Director of the Tax Planning team in managing U.S. income tax audits (federal and state), including support for contested tax matters that are in IRS Appeals or litigation. This role is responsible for interpreting federal income tax laws, responding to IRS requests, and assisting in the successful resolution of tax controversy related matters. This position will manage tax audits and be expected to find technically based creative solutions to complex audit issues.

This position offers the flexibility of remote/virtual work and can be based from a variety of locations within the US, not limited to those listed.

In this function you will:

  • Work collaboratively with other members of the team/department to develop and implement holistic end-to-end controversy management system/approach to prevent, manage, and resolve tax controversy as they may arise.

  • Support the day-to-day operations of U.S. federal income tax audits and assist in managing the company’s relationship with the IRS.

  • Consult subject matter experts to provide complete, accurate responses to the IRS in a timely manner.

  • Compile information and respond to Information Document Requests, Notices of Proposed Adjustments, and other exam related matters.

  • Organize and maintain information requests and related documents, assignments, and due dates

  • Work with the Director and Manager to evaluate and defend various complex tax issues including International and transfer pricing matters as they arise during the audit process.

  • Evaluate developments in IRS procedures. Stay abreast of changing IRS processes, translating those changes to the parameters in which the organization works.

  • Demonstrating extensive technical skills in all state and local tax matters, including tax planning, consulting, compliance, restructuring, controversy and audit defense.

  • Provide tax controversy / audit support and representation before state tax authorities.

  • Research tax issues, including issues surrounding audit strategy.

  • Participate in planning activities for US federal and state efficiency.

  • Work in a collaborative environment as this position will work closely with the tax compliance, tax provision and international tax teams

Minimum Requirements

BA/BS plus at least 5 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Preferred Qualifications

  • 6+ years of progressive tax experience, including some controversy work, with an accounting/law firm and/or a large publicly-traded company

  • Experience with overall compliance process (Federal, International, and SALT)

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or JD is preferred

  • MS in Taxation or LLM is a plus

  • Thorough knowledge of Federal and International income tax law (e.g. Subchapter C, Subchapter K, international tax provision, tax treaties, transfer pricing, etc.)

  • Excellent communication skills as well as the ability to effectively interact with all levels within the company as well as with outside service providers

  • Comfortable meeting deadlines and solving problems in a fast paced, multiple priorities environment

  • Detail oriented with excellent research and analytical skills

  • Ability to work independently; a self-starter; results oriented

  • Strong organizational and project planning skills

  • Proven ability to simultaneously manage several projects

  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex tax and accounting issues

  • Demonstrated capability to collaborate with a team

  • Proven success building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external business partners

  • Solid computer skills including Microsoft applications, CorpTax, BNA Corporate Tax Analyzer, etc.

Offered rate of compensation (Colorado locations only) will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The salary range for this position is: $90,165 to $166,800.
