AECOM Energy & Sustainability Engineer in Los Angeles, California

Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a talented and highly motivated engineer to join the High Performance Buildings and Communities team in Southern California (based in either Los Angeles or Orange, CA). The multi-disciplined team provides energy design leadership and consulting on sustainable buildings and communities and our projects range from the design of net zero buildings through the sustainable planning of major global eco-cities.

The role will be predominately centered in energy planning where technical expertise of building and infrastructure systems is applied at a campus and city-scale to develop implementable strategies to meet and exceed energy and resilience goals. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Development of community- and portfolio-level energy strategies, looking at, but not limited to: energy conservation, renewable energy and storage, district energy, and microgrids

  • Technical assessment of building/campus energy demand and potential energy supply strategies using a combination of energy modeling, proprietary analysis tools, and the development of customized tools

  • Preparing and presenting results and professional recommendations, in report or presentation format, to clients and teams

  • Work or leading others in a multi-disciplinary team to undertake analysis and produce reports for deadlines

  • Understand and react to the changing design of the overall building/community and be able to communicate their ideas clearly

  • Develop and communicate ideas clearly and concisely

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Building Sciences, Planning or related field with strong technical skills

  • Team-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced office with minimal supervision

  • Excellent written, graphical and verbal communication skills

  • Knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office Suite, and in particular, Excel for data analytics

  • Ability to balance various project and company responsibilities and deadlines, while maintaining professionalism and quality

  • Adaptable and flexible, showing a willingness and ability to take on new projects or areas with or without supervision, as required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters’ degree in engineering, planning, or sustainability-related field

  • Professional Engineer License

  • Experience of energy master planning and assessment of low carbon infrastructure

  • Experience in the assessment of distributed generation assets (solar PV, battery energy storage, etc.)

  • Experience in leading teams in technical project delivery and/or project management

  • Experience and knowledge of energy simulation software and other industry standard packages (e.g. IES, EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, etc.)

  • Experience with energy codes and standards including ASHRAE 90.1 and Title 24 Part 6

  • Knowledge of sustainability assessment systems (such as LEED, Green Globes, and BREEAM)

  • Additional certifications/licenses e.g. P.E., LEED AP, ENV SP are a plus

  • Knowledge of a programming language (python, R, C++, etc.)

  • Experience using the Adobe Suite (InDesign, Illustrator)
