Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a responsive, organized, detailed orientated Area SH&E Manager for immediate employment in the Los Angeles, CA office. This position works in a team with 3 additional Area SH&E Managers to provide support to AECOM Design, Consulting Services operations throughout the west coast of the united states, including Alaska and Hawaii. This position reports to the Regional SH&E Manager. The Area SH&E Manager is a generalist that can quickly learn and adapt to new situations and challenges, make assessments about resources needed and assist operations managers in successfully delivering safe and healthy work. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, those listed below:

  • Provide visible and active leadership throughout the area for safety

  • Develop, monitor and assess safety programs at diverse work sites (civil construction, building construction, environmental remediation and construction, industrial construction)

  • Identify specific, actionable and feasible solutions to complex safety, health and environmental issues

  • Mange and validate the effectiveness of corrective actions

  • Develop site and project specific safety plans, training programs, audit protocols, and supporting safety programs (rewards and recognition, security plans etc)

  • Analyze and interpret safety and health data and make recommendations to leadership on response actions (safety metrics, air sampling etc)

  • Recommend changes to policies and procedures that affect the Area’s operations and employees

  • Train and coach all levels of employees in the organizations

  • Interface with clients, regulators and external parties to resolve safety concerns

  • Assist operational group in meeting safety performance targets

  • Conduct safety training, lead meetings and work groups involving various types of workers, ability to adapt group dynamics and create engaging learning environments

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field

  • 10+ years' progressive experience

  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge in CalOSHA, Federal OSHA, USEPA, DOT, Radiation Safety, NFPA 70e

  • Strong background in construction safety, experience with US Army Corp of Engineer EM-385, owner controlled insurance programs, and major oil and gas safety programs

  • Must be able to achieve compliance with applicable occupational safety and health regulations of diverse work sites and office settings, while pushing projects and offices towards safety excellence

  • Requires a high level of professionalism, strong skills in relationship building, and well-formed leadership style

  • Experience diffusing escalating situations, managing change, and remaining objective in the face a varying opinions, accounts and influences

  • Must be able to motivate others, build teams and maintain forward thinking approach

  • Ability to successfully influence and inspire

  • Able to perform in a fast paced, highly dynamic work environment, prioritize appropriately, and be highly responsive

  • Able to relate to and perform well in front of field technicians, engineers, scientists, senior managers and executives

  • Travel with overnight stays will be required and may account for 40% of time

  • Able to work cross functionally in operations, and partner with other internal stakeholders

  • Valid drivers license required

  • Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience preferable in the transportation, energy/power, and civil/heavy construction projects

  • Certification as a Registered Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent preferred

  • Advanced Degree in SH&E related field preferred
