Job Summary

Within AECOM’s Engineering and Facilities business is the Energy and Sustainability group with a wide range of expertise particularly in the feasibility and engineering design of bespoke carbon and cost-saving solutions.

This team specialises in the understanding of energy cycles in the built environment and the critical thinking needed to produce long-term sustainable responses. Recent achievements include working with large organisations such as the Houses of Parliament to reduce energy and carbon consumption, work to establish the future energy strategy for proposed development at Old Oak Common and a heavy involvement in design and feasibility work to support the delivery of District Heating through both the GLA and BEIS. 2018 will see major growth across this business unit in the following key areas:

  • Large scale Energy consumption studies for big property portfolios

  • Smart Cities and Communities

  • Sustainable Infrastructure

  • Optimisation of Assets

This team has a current requirement for a Senior Engineer who will take a senior role in the steering, growth and development of the Group, with a particular focus on technical leadership and delivery.

Active projects in this field and within the current pipeline consist of CHP, heat pump and District Heating (DH) feasibility studies, energy masterplanning, energy centre/ DH design and operational assessments.

Job Duties:

  • Lead the technical delivery of energy engineering projects including District Heating, energy efficiency and renewable technology feasibility and design projects.

  • Project management and technical leadership of projects

  • Interfacing, communicating and building relationships with clients and key contacts around the business and wider industry

  • Mentoring and guiding junior engineers

  • Bid writing and work winning

Specific Skills Required:

  • Detailed knowledge of building services, their design and operational requirements and interactions including controls (SCADA/BEMS) and utilities

  • Broad, outline knowledge of renewable and low carbon technologies (e.g. fuel cells, heat pumps)

  • Knowledge of energy regulation and compliance requirements (Part L) including BRE assessments

  • Broad knowledge of guidelines that may be used for building design, energy and renewables

  • Knowledge of the Heat Networks Code of Practice

  • Specific knowledge on heating design; boilers, flues, pumps, pipework etc.

  • Ability to generate schematics associated with the design / plant room layouts etc

  • Knowledge of CHP design in ranges greater than 100 kWe including electrical interface elements

  • Commercial awareness and the ability to assess the long term operational impacts of operation and maintenance of mechanical/electrical plant

  • Ability to design energy centres including boilers, CHPs, heat pumps, thermal stores and utility connections

  • Understanding of Energy Centre/Boiler House performance interaction with BREEAM/CfSH i.e. energy, carbon, NOx

  • Knowledge of design and layout of plantrooms; spatial coordination associated with installation and maintenance

  • Detailed knowledge of systems associated with DE design and operation; metering, billing, controls, pump methodologies, HIUs

  • Detailed knowledge of commissioning practices associated with building services

  • Knowledge of the ESCo marketplace

  • Knowledge of latest guidance and regulation that governs aspects of District Energy

  • Advanced Excel capability

  • Use and production of Gantt charts using software such as Microsoft Project

  • Understanding of BIM practices

  • Knowledge of NES

Minimum Requirements

  • Experience in Building Services industry or Energy Industry

  • Design experience of working in buildings and places / M&E / Energy / District Energy

  • Experience of building and plant condition surveys

  • Experience of delivering Energy Option Studies / Energy Audits / District Heating Feasibility Studies

  • Track record of project delivery from concept stage through to operation

  • A track record of delivery of complex projects in modelling and the application of various types of energy systems within a variety of scenarios

  • A track record of delivery of complex projects in modelling and the application of various types of energy systems within a variety of scenarios

  • Experience of medium to large scale projects in multiple sectors including mixed-use residential, industrial, commercial, education, government and health.

  • Experience of thermal/utility diversity assessment to identified standards

  • Experience in identification and assessment of possible Energy Conservation Measures in the built environment

  • Membership of recognized professional institutions

  • Should be a chartered engineer or working towards

  • Demonstrate thought leadership in the field of Energy

Preferred Qualifications

  • MEng / BEng in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred
