AECOM’s Economic Development practitioners have been instrumental in forging collaborations to reposition local economies, design master plans, execute regeneration strategies, create more sustainable environments, formulate comprehensive plans, produce and review business plans and adopt regulatory and financing strategies that enable effective implementation. We are adept at working in multidisciplinary teams.

AECOM’s Economic Development Team is one of the leading and growing consultancy teams in the UK working on a wide range of economic development projects in the UK and overseas. Currently these include major projects such as the A303 Stonehenge Tunnel, High Speed 2, Crossrail 2 and Sutton Tram Extension as well as a wide range of mixed use developments. We also complete numerous commissions for Local Enterprise Partnerships, Local Authorities and City Regions covering business case development, infrastructure and Enterprise Zone bids and the development of transport, economic, spatial and infrastructure strategies to drive economic growth and productivity improvements. Internationally we are currently producing an economic plan for a new city in KSA and have developed RC100 Resilience Strategies for Paris, Ramallah and The Hague.

We are now looking for a Senior Consultant to join our team to support our expanding UK and international economic development business from our London base.

  • Responsible as part of the Planning + Economics team at AECOM for helping to win and deliver significant projects in the UK and overseas covering:

  • Economic growth, sectoral and other spatial strategies from local to national level in the UK and overseas.

  • Socio-economic impact assessments of infrastructure and development schemes to support planning applications, business cases and funding bids.

  • Case making for and feasibility of a wider range of economic development projects and programmes.

  • Design and complete primary and secondary research projects and data analysis to develop a compelling evidence base.

  • Evaluations of projects, programmes and policies to show impact and value for money.

It would also be helpful to have knowledge and experience of work in one or more of the following areas: market research and modelling (e.g. covering industrial sectors, retail and/or housing market research); business planning and feasibility studies for economic development projects; economic and socioeconomic impact assessments; regeneration strategies and local economic development and sectoral strategies; and evaluations.

  • Responsible and accountable to a Director or Associate Director for the technical delivery of small projects, or undertaking a technical role as part of an integrated project team on large assignments.

  • Proactive in being client focused, understanding the needs of the project and offering high quality, professional economic development and related advice.

  • Provide support on business development efforts and develop business awareness through resource and project management. Over time develop a project management role in business development and work winning.

  • Committed to continuing professional development and career progression and encouraging others to do the same. We will support you and invest in you through our career development and leadership potential programmes.

  • Provide guidance to junior staff within studio and over time start to manage junior and graduate staff.


Minimum Requirements

  • A developing track record in economic development. Also it would be desirable to have experience of some of the following: land use planning and property development, transport and infrastructure projects, design and delivery of business support and skills initiatives, business case and funding submissions, innovation and inward investment.

  • A portfolio of work which demonstrates excellent technical capabilities including report writing and presentation.

  • Analytic and numerical skills including spreadsheet and other software skills.

  • A track record of contributing to innovative economic development solutions and some experience of working across complex local, regional and national stakeholder relationships.

  • A highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills and ability to work in a consultancy environment, effectively managing client relationships and working to tight deadlines.

  • A team player who can work as part of wide project teams across disciplines and geographies – making high quality technical contributions. Helps to support the building of the team and the internal relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree in geography, economics or a related discipline and an MSc/MBA/equivalent qualification in a similar field, or overall equivalent experience.
