Position Title Principal Environmental Consultant

As an integral member of the International Environmental and Social (E&S) Team based in London – Aldgate Tower. You will be involved in the delivery of environmental and social impact assessment (as well as environmental and social due diligence) consulting services to our private sector clients for international projects.
Our work helps clients deliver their projects in socially sustainable ways, leading to better outcomes for projects and communities. Our staff gain experience on some of the world’s largest and most challenging projects, working with a diversity of clients and communities in different countries, and across many sectors including infrastructure, oil and gas, power, and mining.
Working as either a member of a multidisciplinary team, or directly for clients, you will take a lead in the coordination and delivery of ESIAs. This might include management of teams involved in baseline surveys, assessments of E&S impacts, defining mitigation measures, determining permitting and regulatory compliance of proposed and/or existing operations, and assisting clients to meet the standards of international lenders. You will also be engaged in ESDD-related projects, for project sponsors and lenders covering a range of activities from initial due diligence to ongoing project monitoring and / or implementation of environmental and social management systems.
Our UK Environment & Planning (E&P) business comprises over 200 people across approximately 20 offices. In London and the South-East we have offices in Aldgate, Wimbledon, Croydon, St Albans, Cambridge and Basingstoke.
The international E&S practice of E&P includes environmental and social specialists, working alongside other technical disciplines such as acoustics, air quality, ecology, and heritage etc. Our ESIA specialists perform the full range of consulting services for international projects, including ESIAs, E&S due diligence and audits. Our geographical areas of focus are Africa (including francophone countries), Middle East and Central/ Eastern Europe.
The following provides a sample of our recent and current projects:
ESIA services for major infrastructure projects in Gabon.
ESDD monitoring for an oil pipeline in Kenya.
ESIA for region-wide oil development in Uganda.
ESIA for a new port development in Senegal
ESDD of a petrochemical project in Egypt.
Working as either a leader of a multidisciplinary team, or directly for clients, you will be engaged in the delivery of ESIAs. Responsibilities include:
Lead an ESIA team, with a client-facing role:
Manage the delivery of ESIA projects to ensure projects are delivered on time and to the highest standard
Understand and implement project management principles and fully appreciate the need to work within project budgets
Lead preparation of project documents including Scoping Reports and related technical studies in accordance with project timescales
Evaluate compliance of projects with both National Standards as well as those adopted by major international lenders (eg IFC and EBRD).
Coordinate and conduct ESIA workshops with technical specialists
Assist clients to meet the standards of international lenders,
Coordinate and manage technical specialists in their assessment activities, coordinate their contributions to ESIA and prepare and deliver clearly written ESIA reports,
Prepare concise summaries of technical information and present to client teams,
Be a proficient project manager, including coordination and financial management of projects;
Support business development through leading the production of Expressions of Interest and tenders, and to continuously improve our service offering for our clients
Understand and comply with quality and health & safety requirements and ensure these are addressed throughout a project
You must have international experience in ESIA, and / or ESDD outside of UK including experience in project assessment and evaluation against international standards, such as the IFC Performance Standards, Equator Principles, World Bank Safeguard Policies, and/or European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Performance Requirements.
You will have good communication skills both verbal and written, including demonstrable experience developing comprehensive written reports.
The successful candidate would ideally have a post-graduate qualification in Environmental Management or social development.
Candidates with a relevant under-graduate degree and a comprehensive level of practical experience will also be considered.
