Job Summary


Our UK&I T&D team is spread across Aberdeen, Ashford, Basingstoke, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Croydon, Dublin, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Leeds, London Aldgate, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Plymouth, St Albans. If you are not located near a main office, we will consider a remote-working arrangement.

Job Summary:

This role will involve leading and undertaking network/system studies for a range of transmission projects at voltages up to 400 kV, using standard packages such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSS/E, PSCAD/EMTDC, ETAP etc. Extensive experience in using at least one of these packages is essential.

The Role:

This role is a mixture between technical expert with elements of leadership that will coordinate out UK studies capability to support our T&D Developers and Utility clients. On the technical side, the role requires a range of network planning and system studies to support ongoing projects. Demonstrable experience of successfully completing grid connection studies is important. A flexible approach and ability to work across range of projects at the same time is also an important requirement. Additionally, on the leadership side the successful candidate will lead a matrix team of studies engineers delivering projects (as Project Manager) and will also act a focal point of contact for power system studies capability (circa of 4 FTE).

Technical Requirements and Knowledge:

  • Relevant professional experience working for an Engineering Design Consultancy or an OEM vendor or Utility Network Planning and connections

  • Graduate qualifications in Electrical and/or Power Systems Engineering

  • Undertaken or reviewed detailed grid connection studies using PSS/e, PSCAD, ETAP, PowerFactory software platforms

  • Successful track record in field of expertise and substantial project experience

  • Basic understanding of transmission and distribution planning for both regulated and industrial networks including transmission and distribution connection process and associated guidelines and requirements for connecting new generators and loads

  • Some knowledge of python scripting for both PSSE and PSCAD.

  • Serves as lead engineer on mid- to large size projects.

  • Provides specialized technical input to studies and design for staff's specific area of expertise.

  • Approves and signs off on work.

  • Provides technical expertise for studies and design efforts.

  • Presents complex technical solutions to clients.

  • Performs quality control reviews of work developed by others.

  • Participates in development of technical proposals.

  • Provides estimates for the engineering budget and schedule to meet requirements on large projects.

Minimum Requirements

Required/Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Relevant professional experience working for an Engineering Design Consultancy or an OEM vendor or Utility Network Planning and connections

  • Relevant degree

  • Proven experience undertaking a range of network planning and system studies using industry standard packages at voltages up to 400kV.

  • Advanced knowledge of at least one of the following packages is required, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSS/E, PSCAD/EMTDC or EMTP.

  • Knowledge and previous experience of utility grid connection studies requirements

  • Strong team working culture

  • Customer facing skills

  • An ability to work flexibly across a broad range of projects

  • The vision and skills to apply skills and experience to emerging technologies to meet new project requirements

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Automation of studies using scripting (Python or similar)

  • Knowledge of ETAP

  • Design of HV cable systems using CYMCAP

  • Earthing system studies and design using commercially available software such as CDEGS or similar.

  • HVDC system studies
