Job Summary

AECOM’s façade engineering team are seeking a talented, experienced and technical candidate for a Principal/ Associate Façade Engineer position. The team are currently delivering the design of a host of projects in the UK, Ireland and further afield in a range of sectors, including Healthcare, Residential, Commercial, Transport, Sports, Mixed Use and Retrofit. Many of these are delivered as part of a multi-discipline AECOM design team, in collaboration with our Sustainability, Fire, Structures, MEP, Lighting, Acoustics, Energy, Cost and/ or Project Management consultants and specialisms. Our team also delivers work to external clients as a direct appointment.

AECOM is seeking to recruit a Façade Engineering consultant to join the Building Engineering team based in London Aldgate. The successful candidate will assume general responsibilities for façade consultancy input to a wide range of clients and projects and will pro-actively contribute to the growth of AECOM’s Façade Engineering team’s capabilities. The candidate is to have extensive experience in designing and delivering a range of building types. We expect candidates to have minimum 8 years of dedicated façade industry experience.


The following is an overview of responsibilities and performance standards typically required of you as a Principal/ Associate Façade Engineer:

  • Have a genuine passion for Façade Engineering, technical excellence and good communication.

  • Provide Design Leadership within the team on our Global Façade Projects.

  • Act as a Mentor for the Façade Engineering Staff, particularly Senior Engineers.

  • Facilitate and participate in Technical Quality reviews of the team’s deliverables including specifications, reports, calculations and drawings.

  • Implement a holistic approach on our projects including coordination and resolution of Fire, Acoustics, Energy, Sustainability, Structural, Cost, Installation, Aesthetics considerations. Apply this approach to system selection studies during Design Stages of our projects.

  • Provide façade engineering design and buildability consultancy, including material knowledge and installation techniques.

  • Provide and oversee detailed analysis as required for report submissions including 2D thermal and condensation assessments, structural glass calculations, structural sizing of framing and wind loading.

  • Provide and oversee design sketches and reports as required for schematic, design development and construction phases of projects.

  • Coordinate with client consultants such as the architects, structural, sustainability, and acoustic engineers to determine best envelope design outcomes.

  • Act as Project Lead on assigned projects: manage projects and their deliverables; site meetings, design workshops and site inspection as required and/or as project planning stipulates.

  • As Project Lead, oversee the work of Sub Consultants/Contractors and review outputs produced by them.

  • As Project Lead, monitor and report on team performance against agreed timelines, and fees/budgets

  • Assist with winning new work including preparation and coordination of expressions of interest, tender submissions and similar consulting proposals.

  • Build good client relationships and deliver work.

  • Present/ prepare presentations to clients and chair meeting and workshops.

  • Deliver high quality, clearly written outputs.

  • Delegate work to junior staff; manage progress and delivery.

  • Liaise with other staff, project teams, associated consultants and clients and assist in building and maintaining relationships with all of these

Minimum Requirements

As a Principal/ Associate Façade Engineer, you will have holistic knowledge of a range of façade systems with the ability to develop the relevant solutions for a given project. In addition, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Proven experience within the Facade Engineering industry

  • Experience and knowledge in the design, procurement and fabrication of facades.

  • Knowledge of relevant façade & structural software, eg. Strand 7, SJ MEPLA, Therm, Autocad, Revit.

  • Ability to use all Microsoft Office and related packages.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An architectural, engineering or building design related degree.

  • Extensive experience in the façade industry.

  • Extensive of dedicated façade consultancy experience.

  • An ability to communicate effectively, to be client-facing and to write concise and clear reports.

  • A detailed understanding of system design considerations, performance analysis of the systems and testing procedures.

  • Experience of stakeholder engagement and stakeholder workshop facilitation.

  • Experience in bidding for or supporting the winning of work.

  • Experience in project and client management.
