The AECOM UK&I Ground Engineering Practice is expanding and has a Senior / Principal Engineer level vacancy for a Geotechnical Engineer or (numerically minded) Engineering Geologist in the rail team in Leeds.

AECOM’s rail team provide design support to a large rail contractor providing earthwork remedial solutions

We require an ambitious team player who will have a proven track record in ground engineering and geotechnical design including the ability to manage projects from inception to completion. You will be experienced in team and line management having the ability to support and manage project team members.

To be successful candidates must have a proven track record in the delivery of ground engineering projects in the UK and be fully conversant with the technical standards that apply to the rail environment.

Job Duties include:

  • Close support to our senior team in project delivery and maintaining high levels of client satisfaction.

  • Mentoring of junior staff, supporting them to achieve chartered status.

  • Developing Client Relationship and being the interface with Client.

  • Active input to team and client meetings, being prepared to own decisions and put forward alternative ideas and concepts.

  • Prepare fee bids and proposals, including cost estimate and programme for new job opportunities.

  • Ensure rigorous adherence to AECOMs industry leading quality assurance programme.

  • Undertaking geotechnical calculations for design of earthwork and rock cutting repairs (ie. slope stability, rock fall analysis, soil nail design etc.).

  • Preparing, checking and reviewing geotechnical assessment reports, works options forms, Form 001, Form 002 and Form 003, specifications construction drawings, and CDM risk assessment.

  • Site inspections.

  • Construction site supervision and support.

Minimum Requirements

  • Possess strong problem solving and inter-personal skills, working closely and collaboratively with colleagues and clients in a multi-disciplinary environment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write clear and concise technical reports and documents.

  • You will have a good knowledge of the Network Rail design and reporting processes.

  • A wide range of experience, knowledge and skills in geotechnical engineering and/or engineering geology.

  • A strong working knowledge of UK ground conditions and ground investigation practice.

  • Geotechnical Engineer candidates must have strong analytical skills and in-depth experience in the geotechnical design of earthworks. Experience in numerical modelling using PLAXIS and similar software is desirable, but not essential.

  • Engineering Geology candidates will be familiar with soil and rock slopes engineering and the use of slope stability software like Slope/W.

  • Clean driving licence.

  • Candidates should be willing to travel within the north of England.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering with a bias towards geotechnics (Geotechnical Engineer candidates).

  • BSc/MSci in Geology, Engineering Geology or Earth Science (Engineering Geology candidates).

  • MSc in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology is desirable.

  • Chartered Geologist or Engineer status.
