The Senior Ecologist will deliver ecological consultancy and advisory services to both internal and external clients to a high level of technical quality and to programme and budget.
Working as part of the existing network of AECOM ecologists;
Leading on winning a wide range of ecological work;
Supporting internal clients with delivering the ecological requirements within multi-disciplinary tenders and projects;
Working independently, or with other ecologists and professionals, in the planning, delivery and management of protected species and habitat surveys; analysis and evaluation of results, impacts assessments, and the design and implementation of successful mitigation strategies including European Protected Species licence applications within budgets and deadlines;
Assisting with managing the technical and financial performance of ecological and Environmental Impact Assessment projects;
Building and maintaining both internal and external client relationships, including providing urgent ecological response and / or advice in person, by email or over the phone;
Communicating effectively with their line manager, project managers, clients, project teams and other members of the ecology team, within projects and with clients by telephone, e-mail, letters and reports;
Developing and promoting best practice and innovation across the ecology business;
Compliance with internal business management procedures, including in relation to health and safety and technical quality of all advice and outputs; and ddevelopment of the ecology team or support wider environmental business goals, as required.
Our UK Ecology Team comprises over 100 ecologists based across the UK and covers all freshwater, marine and terrestrial habitats. We provide our clients with the full range of ecological services including specialist habitat and species surveys, impact assessment, advice on biodiversity mitigation, offsetting and enhancement, and management planning for biodiversity. Our projects include high profile major transport and other infrastructure, conventional and renewable power development, as well as other industrial and commercial development projects in the UK, continental Europe and Africa. The busy Leeds team is working on numerous ongoing projects, in the Midlands, Yorkshire and the North East. There is also scope to be involved in projects further afield.
Specific Skills Required:
Have substantial field survey and report writing experience;
Have experience of managing teams on ecological or wildlife or biodiversity projects;
Have experience assisting in the co-ordination of surveys;
Have experience providing advice to clients on a wide range of topics;
Hold a recognised degree in a biological, science or related discipline;
Possess one or more protected species licences; and
Have a proven track record of providing terrestrial ecological inputs to projects, including assessment in accordance with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) guidelines.
Experience of ecological impact assessment, design and/or construction management on major infrastructure projects in the UK
Proactive and careful approach to Health and Safety, including first aid training certificate
Technical and professional proficiency with a demonstrable history of successfully working in ecology consultancy including through client liaison, within multi-disciplinary teams and completion of projects to a high standard, on time and within budgets.
Full Member of CIEEM (or eligible to meet relevant criteria), or other relevant professional body
Holder of relevant protected species survey (and mitigation licences), or ability and willingness to work towards holding such licences;
Chartered with a relevant professional accreditation/ registration body
Evidence of ongoing vocational training
- Recognised degree in a biological, science or related discipline – a relevant post graduate qualification in the one of these would be advantageous;
