AECOM are looking to recruit a Remote Sensing Lead to join our Geospatial & Data Services (G&DS) team. This is a senior full-time role with responsibility for developing and growing our remote sensing business to support and address the challenges facing our clients across a wide range of sectors. This role will focus on the analytical aspects of remote sensing, developing and implementing solutions to address the challenges faced by our clients.
The role sits within AECOM’s G&DS team, a team of more than 40 geospatial and data specialists that are located in multiple offices across the UK and Ireland. We are flexible where you wish to be based. You will report to the Geospatial & Data Services Lead. The role will participate in the leadership of the G&DS team, and will be part of the management team, responsible for managing and providing strategic direction for the team.
You will be responsible for providing technical and strategic leadership in the discipline and developing and implementing a growth strategy for the remote sensing business. You will have an excellent understanding of the consultancy environment and will bring innovative ideas along with the drive and commitment required to implement them. Promoting and selling the capabilities of the team will be essential. You will therefore need to be comfortable in promoting and selling earth observation and remote sensing services to a wide range of clients, both internal and external. You will also be responsible for managing and developing the resources under your management, and in particular maximising the contribution and skill level of the existing team.
Initially, it is envisaged that a strategy and implementation plan will be developed to set the short, medium and long-term goals and objectives for the remote sensing business. This will include a review of existing capabilities and key strategic opportunities and focus for the business. You will have a good understanding of current technologies on the market as well as insight into potential future trends in the sector. You will also have an excellent understanding of existing platforms and sensors and how the outputs can be applied to AECOM projects.

Work with the G&DS leadership to provide inputs and contribute to the delivery of the overall business strategy. Inputs will specifically focus on the contribution that remote sensing can make to the delivery of the overall business plan.
Develop growth plan for remote sensing business. Identify key markets and develop & implement strategy for entry/ increasing presence.
Collaborate with Business Management Lead to provide input to opportunities and proposals which maximise the value of remote sensing on projects.
Work with Business Management Lead in order to create marketing collateral and marketing strategy to promote service offering.
Manage all resources associated with team including staff, software and hardware including provision of estimates for future investment (i.e. recruitment, software licenses, hardware etc.) including business case justification.
Conduct technology review and use results to help inform growth plan and strategy for the team, which aligns with the overall team plan.
Engage with teams and AECOM Digital Leads to provide remote sensing support to projects where appropriate.
Develop, document and implement best practice solutions and standards for the team. Ensure that these are communicated appropriately across the business.
Management of internal staff resources to deliver work cost effectively, on time, budget and to the required standard.
Where appropriate, utilise external resources to maximise margin on project delivery. Develop an understanding of the wider available resources and build a network to utilise them where appropriate.
Develop skills of personnel within the team, providing a career development pathway for those wishing to follow a remote sensing career.
Identify training and development needs and develop a business case for any investment.
Ensure at least one Technical Lead is identified for remote sensing projects and is allocated to every remote sensing project where relevant.
Provide leadership on quality assurance, putting in place QA/ QC processes on all projects and ensuring that these are communicated to all team members.
Engage with E&GE Digital Lead where appropriate to promote the Digital services and input into E&GE wide digital initiatives.
You will provide critical GIS Leadership to delivering projects on time and budget.
You should be innovative and creative with strong interpersonal and communication skills and be comfortable working independently as well as in an interdisciplinary multi-cultural team.
Specific Skills Required
Industry wide knowledge of current technologies and future potential technology trends.
Detailed knowledge of platforms and sensors and their application in a commercial environment.
Ability to liaise with internal and external clients to promote earth observation and remote sensing services and deliver high quality outputs into projects
Problem solving – ability to identify and implement remote sensing solutions to address client challenges
Advise project teams on capabilities/ limitations of different EO data sources.
Experience of automation of common routines/ workflows using the likes of Erdas Imagine Spatial Modeler or similar
Experience of applying Machine Learning, AI and Deep Learning techniques
Good knowledge of open source solutions and data sources
An excellent understanding of spatial data structures and fundamental concepts of GIS
Engage with other relevant disciplines, such as AECOM UAV team and Geomatics teams.
Ability to manage and deliver projects to industry best practice and corporate standards.
Customer focused, motivated, with a keen eye for an opportunity to promote the service offering. Also needs to be a keen listener who can think creatively and enjoys developing solutions to address client challenges.
Able to build, motivate, communicate with, and coordinate a team based in multiple locations

Proven technical experience in earth observation or remote sensing in a commercial environment
Leadership and management experience including building and growing teams
Commercial experience of promoting and selling remote sensing services with an established network of contacts in the sector
Experience of developing, implementing, and selling new services
A degree qualification in earth observation or remote sensing science
A degree qualification in earth observation or remote sensing science (a relevant MSc would be desirable but not essential).
