Functioning in an airfield tower facility, Tower Controllers are responsible for issuing clearances and traffic information to aircraft landing, departing or operating within the airport traffic area. They provide the safe separation and movement of departing, landing, and maneuvering aircraft at their airfield facility. They receive and transmit flight plans, meteorological, navigational, and other information to perform preflight and emergency service for airplane pilots, accept flight plans from pilots in person or by telephone and review them for completeness. Position is represented by a Union Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Control air traffic on and within vicinity of airport according to established FAA and USAF procedures to prevent collisions and to minimize delays arising from traffic congestion.
Answer radio calls from arriving and departing aircraft and issue landing and takeoff instructions, runway in use, wind velocity and direction, visibility, taxiing instruction, traffic advisories, and any other data pertinent to flight safety to aircraft operating in and around the airport traffic area.
Transfer control of IFR/VFR aircraft departing to and accept control of arriving flights from Nellis Radar, using approved communications.
Alert airport emergency crews and other designated personnel by radio or telephone when airplanes are having difficulties.
Operate the ETVS (TED) air traffic control communications console and the DVRS recorder.
Operate the airport lighting panel and the emergency power generator.
Control vehicle traffic on and around the runways using approved FAA and local procedures.
Keep written records of daily events using personal PC.
Performs related duties as required.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:
Typical airfield station, tower or terminal office environment with no unusual hazards, occasional lifting to 20 pounds. Constant sitting while using the computer terminal, ability to discern all colors of the spectrum (must not be color-blind), constant use of sight abilities while reviewing documents, constant use of speech/hearing abilities for communication, constant mental alertness, must possess planning/organizing skills, and must be able to work under deadlines. Performs duties typically in semi-darkness.
High School diploma or equivalent ad completion of an accredited military or FAA Airfield Management/Flight Service school or program. Must have a total of eight (8) years’ experience and at least two (2) years Control Tower supervisory experience. Air Force Special Code (AFSC) of 1C100 (Air Force Certified 7-Level Watch Supervisor staff sergeant (E-5) or above with SEI 054 and 055) or . Must possess required knowledge, skills and abilities to effectively promote air traffic system safety in compliance with established Air Force, FAA, ICAO or NATO criterion
Must have completed an accredited Military or Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) air traffic control school.
Must have held or hold a FAA Control Tower Operator Certificate (CTO)
Must obtain a FAA Second Class Flight Physical prior to assignment.
Good oral and written communication skills.
On occasion must be able to work weekends and holidays.
Must be able to work Day, Swing or Grave shifts.
Must possess and maintain a "Secret" government security clearance
Possess a valid state issued driver’s license.
