AECOM Senior Quality Assurance Inspector in Hamilton, Ontario

Job Summary

AECOM is seeking an experienced Senior Quality Assurance Inspector for immediate employment. This position can be based in Hamilton, ON office or any other AECOM office within the GTA. This is a temporary position expecting to last 6 months.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Become familiar with contract documents, specifications, standards, manufacturers’ material specifications, and special provisions

  • Supervise Quality Assurance testing and inspect grading, granular, concrete, asphalt, electrical and all other construction activities required as per client policies and procedures

  • Monitor weigh scales used for accuracy and compliance with statutes

  • Work with the Police and the Contractor to anticipate and resolve traffic problems

  • Identify and document deficiencies

  • Review material test results and calculate penalties/bonuses for payment and/or determine remedial action

  • Review the acquisition and use of materials from approved sources only

  • Maintain diaries of contractor’s work, contract progress and inspection milestones

  • Train subordinate staff

  • Assist the office staff (Contract Administrator and Assistant, Office Administrator) in the verification and documentation of payment quantities

  • Resolve routine technical problems on a day-to-day basis and refer problems to the Contract Administrator as necessary

  • Liaise with contractor representatives, property owners and general public during construction to resolve problems

  • Review contractor’s application of and compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, adherence to WHMIS, environmental, Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Waste Management requirements

  • Finalize contract items

  • Conduct delamination survey of structure components including chain dragging, covermeter and half-cell surveys in accordance with ASTM C876

  • Inspect and approve abrasive blast cleaned reinforcing steel at the concrete removal areas as per contract specified visual inspection standard photographs SSPC-VIS 1-89 (Steel Structures Painting Council-Visual Inspection Standard 1-89) conforming to ASTM D2200

  • Conduct visual condition survey of structural components, including identification and location of cracks, rusted areas, delaminations and spalls

  • Carry out covermeter surveys to determine concrete clear cover on new reinforcing steel on bridge decks and barrier walls, and calculate applicable pay factors

  • Carry out determination of waterproofing membrane thickness, consistency of thickness by standard deviation and calculate applicable pay factors

  • Inspect asphalt paving operations, verify mix temperature, paver’s speed, rate of distribution, combination and type of compaction equipment, rolling pattern; identify defective workmanship (such as segregation, roller mark, poor joints etc.) and direct contractor to rectify, as necessary

  • Review contract drawings, addenda, special provisions, standard specifications (OPSS, OPSD), general conditions, working drawings, applicable manuals for constructability

  • Review contractor’s baseline project schedule for approval (using Primavera P6, SureTrak or Microsoft Project); identify errors, unrealistic logical connections among the tasks and improper resource allocation

  • Receive and review contractor's QC and QVE declarations and submissions

  • Review contractor’s concrete and asphalt mix design for approval

  • Inspect sampling procedure and verify that test methods follow specifications; review and analyze test results, determine deficiencies and provide reports to CA

  • Review material test results and issue penalties/bonuses for payment and/or determine remedial action

  • Inspect Contractor’s field tests, ensure quality concrete supply, provide permission for concrete placement and ensure that the approved curing method is implemented

  • Identify and issue construction QC Deviations (when contractor deviates from applicable contract/standard specifications without self-identifying the deficiency)

  • Prepare comments in support of contractor rating

  • Prepare contractor payment statements including quantity calculations, drawings/sketches to substantiate payments to the contractor

  • Assist in the preparation of Monthly Status Reports detailing all construction and administration activities that take place during the month

  • Become trained in, and use a Nuclear Density Gauge for compaction testing

  • Transport material samples from project site to area laboratory

Minimum Requirements

  • OACETT rcsi or PEO EIT designation

  • 5+ years of experience

  • Minimum 3 projects’ experience as either structure, grade, or asphalt inspector

  • Must possess a valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and work during either daytime and nighttime shifts, including weekends

  • Ability to regularly work overtime and / or irregular hours on a routine basis

  • Use personal vehicle for travel to / from project sites

  • Effective oral and written communication skills
