Job Summary


We are seeking a passionate urban and/or environmental planner who cares about the sustainable development of our built and natural environments, is excited by new ideas, wants to work on complex planning challenges and improve the quality of life in our communities.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a strong and supportive national team mentored by Technical Leaders from across our National Planning Practice. We are leading the delivery of some of New Zealand’s most complex and transformational urban planning and environmental management projects including Southern Links, City Rail Link (Link Alliance), Supporting Growth Alliance, and New Zealand’s first National Climate Change and Risk Assessment (NCCRA). Locally we are working on a number of high calibre urban form, placemaking and environmental management projects that cross multiple business and government sectors.

Minimum Requirements


You will be a key member of our local planning team providing expert advice and guidance to internal and external clients, building and enhancing client relationships, winning work and delivering excellent project outcomes.

The role is based in Hamilton, with potential to work across New Zealand and internationally. You will have opportunities to draw on our national and international planning networks and work collaboratively with our ANZ colleagues on best practice urban and environmental planning, innovation and project delivery.

The successful candidate will:

  • Deliver complex urban and environmental planning projects supporting healthy and vibrant community outcomes in areas such as mobility, infrastructure, strategy and policy, land use, parks/open spaces and natural resources.

  • Manage and deliver statutory planning processes

  • Participate in creative stakeholder and public engagement

  • Mentor and help develop junior team members

  • Contribute to and lead business development initiatives

  • Develop and manage client relationships

  • Provide project management support and leadership


  • Passionate, collaborative and supportive team member

  • Excellent analytical, writing, communication and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and deliver quality technical analyses and reports

  • 3+years experience, including in New Zealand

  • Technical experience in areas such as: master planning, infrastructure planning, urban design, public engagement. policy and land use planning, statutory RMA planning.

  • Critical thinker, with ability for best practice creative problem solving.

  • Local government statutory and/or strategic policy planning experience would be an advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Urban and /or Environmental Planning. Specialised training, interest or experience in urban design/urban planning would be an advantage. Candidates with a related degree such as Geography may also be considered.

  • Experience in preparing and presenting evidence at Council and/or Environment Court hearings.
