AECOM Chartered Building Surveyor in Glasgow, United Kingdom

United Kingdom - Lanarkshire, Glasgow

Job Summary

Are you an experienced Graduate or a Chartered Building Surveyor looking to work on surveys and projects that can change the world, and that is always more complex and innovative than the last?

If so we are looking for an experienced graduate or a chartered building surveyor to join our team in Scotland to work for a variety of public and private sector clients carrying out survey and project work in Scotland and further afield. You will be joining a team of like-minded experts that have a passion for innovation and delivering cutting edge solutions.

About Us:

AECOM plays a critical role in the conceptualisation and creation of amazing spaces, delivering projects and buildings that define skylines and communities. AECOM Buildings & Places is made up of dedicated teams delivering projects in Commercial, Residential, Hospitality, Sports Venues, Work Places, Education, Government and Healthcare.

We are friendly, busy and motivated with an established track record of successfully delivering local and overseas projects. Some of our flagship work in recent years include:

Involvement in the Louisa Jordan Hospital in Glasgow, delivering surveys and projects for various NHS Trusts, the University of Edinburgh, Royal Mail Group and the University of Glasgow, to name but a few.

About Our Team:

We are a friendly, hard-working team who enjoy working together and working with AECOM. Our Scottish Building Surveying team consists of 10 professionals based in our Glasgow and Edinburgh offices. We are also a core part of the national UK Building Surveying Team which consists of almost 70 Building Surveyors. Our passion is to support, mentor, collaborate and co-operate as one team. We deliver as one team and we hold ourselves to the highest standards of professional integrity. Honesty, trust and respect for others are really important to us.

We have all worked remotely since March 2020, and due to AECOM’s incredible infrastructure and associated hardware, together with our software and online platforms, our collaboration, co-operation and support network has improved and increased during this period.

Our team is made up of subject matter experts across many fields of professional practice, including dilapidations, technical due diligence, NEC Supervisor services, large scale condition survey programmes, building conservation, and contract administration.

Between us, we have very strong education, healthcare, industrial (both manufacturing and logistics), office and commercial sector expertise. We welcome the opportunity to share our knowledge with you and help you grow and develop your specialist skills.

If you are still on your journey towards your professional qualification, we will support you via our structured training programme, AECOM’s ADVANCE programme for graduate development, and extensive mentoring, tutoring and shadowing opportunities. We provide extensive support in your journey to your final assessment interview. Our UK building surveying leaders will participate in multiple mock assessments of professional competence interviews and Q&A sessions with you to aid you in your preparation for your assessment.

In addition, our team leaders have strong financial, business development and operations business skills and we coach and train our team in these ‘softer skills. It is important to us that our team members understand the core business functions that sit behind their main role as we find this helps their career progression.

Job Responsibilities:

You must have knowledge and experience of a range of core building surveying technical competencies in order to deliver the variety of survey and project works that will be required. You will ideally have experience in carrying out condition surveys, feasibility studies, designing and specifying project works, tendering these, then administering these on-site, procuring statutory consents, managing health and safety matters relating to your surveys/projects.

If you have dilapidations, technical due diligence, quality monitoring, development monitoring or reinstatement cost assessment experience, so much the better. Knowledge of NEC and/or PPP contracts would be advantageous.

We work with all kinds of buildings, from new buildings not yet out of the ground to some of the oldest and most significant listed buildings in the UK (for example, Edinburgh Castle and the Shard in London). You will therefore be familiar with a wide range of building types and understand the common issues and defects associated with these.

You will be supported to work towards taking ownership of your surveys/projects, including:

  • preparing fee proposals and working on bids

  • taking and refining client instructions

  • organising and successfully delivering programmes of surveys/project works (including considering and planning the necessary internal and external resources)

  • tracking and managing the finances of your surveys/projects

  • tracking and managing your team’s performance on your surveys/projects

  • coordinating timely and accurate invoicing

You will be able to communicate clearly and concisely and you will have solid report writing abilities. Ideally, you will have experience using iPads/tablets to capture data during surveys and delivering reports via a range of software options. You will have excellent Microsoft Office software skills and be proficient in the use of Word and Excel in particular. You will be proficient in the use of AutoCAD or other drawing software.

You will be willing to participate in business development activity.
