Job Summary

Perform diversified general accounting duties requiring knowledge of bookkeeping practices in assigned segment(s) of accounting, working in accordance with prescribed procedures and accepted accounting practices. Duties involve knowledge of computer software applications. Duties are performed with a minimum of supervision. May direct work of others.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Accounting Clerk III maintains journals or subsidiary ledgers of an accounting system and balances and reconciles accounts. Typical duties include one or both of the following: reviewing invoices and statements verifying information, ensuring sufficient funds have been obligated, and if questionable, resolving with the submitting unit determining accounts involved.

  2. The review will include coding transactions, and processing material through data processing for application in the accounting system. Analysis and reconciliation of computer printouts with operating unit reports (contacting units, researching causes of discrepancies, and taking action to ensure that accounts balance. Supervisor provides suggestions for handling unusual or non-recurring transactions.

  3. Conformance with requirements and technical soundness of completed work are reviewed by the supervisor, or are controlled by mechanisms built into the accounting processes.

  4. Assigns proper account and subsidiary account numbers to transactions.

  5. Prepares customer billings.

  6. Prepares and processes documents necessary to adjust transactions.

  7. Coordinates activities with in-put providers, and resolves operational problems.

  8. Interfaces with customers, vendors and Division Data Processing for reporting and problem resolution relative to accounting transactions.

  9. Performs reconciliation of accounts.

  10. Operates the computer system used to interface with Division Data Processing.

  11. Follow standard practice in procedures at beginning and ending of fiscal year and calendar year.

  12. Prepares and maintains special reports and the report distribution list.

  13. Assists in the month end closing process.

  14. Maintains all files in a neat, orderly and up-to-date condition.

  15. Assists in other Accounting areas as may be required including Accounts Payable, Payroll, Job Cost, Contract Billing or Data Processing.

  16. Performs the work of lower level Accounting Clerks as required.

Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or fee; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and extreme heat. The employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, or may include unsafe conditions, questioning nonstandard operations or environmental factors that may involve unmitigated hazards, and providing feedback to supervisors and managers on all safety issues. Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance. Position may require travel.

Minimum Requirements

High School diploma with commercial/general background and at least five (5) years of job related experience or equivalent. Good oral and written communication skills; working knowledge of word-processing and integrated software applications; organizational skills and ability to perform detail-oriented work are required.

Additional requirements:

Must be a U.S. Citizenship.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a government Common Access Card (CAC).

Must pass a pre-employment drug-screen and a government background check.

Candidates must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
