Job Summary

Purpose and Scope:

Act as shop lead to include mentoring lower level Depot Engineers or machinists. Produces replacement parts and new parts in making repairs of mechanical equipment involving many professional job classifications such as auto mechanics, heavy equipment repair and radar systems as examples. Work involves most of the following: interpreting written instructions and specifications; planning and laying out work; using a variety of hand tools and precision measuring instruments common to the machinist trade; setting up and operating standard and CNC machine tools including vertical CNC mill, engine lathe, TIG welder, shop metal shear, metal brake, and hydraulic press; shaping metal parts to tolerances as appropriate; making standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work often requiring skills in trigonometry.

Will be responsible for determining tooling selection, along with order of operation decisions, feeds and speeds of machining; knowledge of the working properties of the common metals; selecting standard materials, parts, and equipment required for this work; and fitting and assembling parts into mechanical equipment.

Essential Responsibilities:

In consultation with other senior techs, engineering reps, and others, conducts tests, analyzes data, redesigns and modifies equipment to improve maintainability/ reliability. Prepares drawings and specifications for ECP/TEC.

Supports planning of, and assists in overhaul, SLEP or IRAN of radar systems. Provides depot-level maintenance and engineering support to include: drawing schematics; preparing diagrams; modifying radar systems to improve performance and/or maintainability; and determining suitable substitutions for obsolete components.

Installs and repairs equipment in field installations. Consults with customer/ supervisors to plan equipment layout. Studies blueprints, schematics, manuals, and other specifications to determine installation procedures. Interprets maintenance manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams. Repairs equipment using standard test equipment and hand tools. Consults with engineering or other senior personnel to resolve unusual problems in system operation and maintenance. On occasion will be required to select and interface with external vendors as the need arises to accomplish a repair. This position requires a lot of designing.

Responsible for the day to day operations of the FTTR machine shop. Responsibilities include but not limited to maintaining shop cleanliness, keeping the equipment in operational condition, dealing with hazmat issues including chemical/flammables inventories, quarterly and annual equipment inventories and keeping the shop stocked with drills/cutters/materials/etc. The incumbent will be responsible to open work orders and create purchase requisitions as needed to accomplish the work of the shop while prioritizing the current work within the shop. This person is the point of contact for all work entering the shop.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Shop environment in which mechanical equipment is operated, is loud and noisy, and some pieces of equipment have exposed moving components, routine lifting up to 50 pounds, regular handling, grasping, kneeling and carrying, and constant use of vision and mental alertness is required. Position may require travel.


Minimum Requirements

Requires a High school diploma/GED and a rounded training in machine-shop practice, usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience. Operating knowledge of machine tools, skilled in setting up and running lathes and CNC milling machines, machining all types of engineering materials such as aluminum, steels, brass, various fiberglass, and plastics in an efficient and safe manner is required.

Minimum Experience Requirements

  • Five years’ relevant technical experience with complex systems

  • Three years’ machine shop experience in:

  • Vertical CNC mill

  • Engine Lathe

  • Welding (TIG and soldering)

  • Shop metal shear

  • Metal brake

  • Hydraulic press

  • Ability to speak, read, and write English

  • Must be a U.S. citizen

  • Must possess and maintain an active DoD security clearance

Minimum Position-Specific Training Required

  • Formal relevant classroom education equivalent to Navy “C” School or vocational school with formal training.

Possess a valid state Driver’s License.
