Job Summary

AECOM has the largest geotechnical engineering practice that has been strengthened and developed locally by centers of excellence throughout UK & Ireland, Europe and Middle East. Individual offices possess wide range of engineering skills and in depth knowledge of working and covering projects in UK, Europe and Middle East in close coordination between all engineering disciplines. This vacancy creates an opportunity for suitably qualified and motivated individual to join the largest number of ground engineering professionals covering Scotland and Ireland with involvement in UK and Europe wide projects delivering sustainable, resilient and sophisticated transport, water and energy infrastructure schemes and buildings projects.

Job Responsibilities:

A senior role contributing to infrastructure, buildings and power projects in the UK and overseas such as ports, airports, roads and railways, buildings & structures, coastal defenses, power generation, water and waste water schemes.

The Senior role will include elements of project planning and budget control.

Tasks will include ground investigation planning and supervision, interpretation of investigation data, derivation of design parameters; ULS and SLS geotechnical designs for deep and shallow foundations, earthworks and cantilever and embedded retaining structures, buried structures, including soil/structure interaction, using commercial software such as WALLAP, Frew, the GeoSlope Suite and Plaxis.

Contribute to or lead the preparation of the Geotechnical Design Reports (as well as Ground Investigations Reports and technical notes) in accordance with nationally and internationally recognised standards.

Attend meetings with contractors and clients, both external and internal and provide geotechnical input to multi-disciplinary project design teams.

Carry out feasibility and scheme assessment, engineering design, sites assessments, construction stage support, and writing reports.

Delivery of projects or parts of multidisciplinary projects, contribute to internal checking and review of work by other members of the geotechnical team.

Involvement in bidding for jobs and preparing programs, budget controls and mentoring junior staff.

Minimum Requirements

  • Experience of working in geotechnical design (i.e. working to EuroCode 7 and other recognised standards).

  • Good range of knowledge and application of ground investigation methods, soil and rock parameter selection, design of shallow footings, piles and retaining walls.

  • A broad range of design experience including foundations, retaining walls, soil nails, reinforced soil, earthworks and ground improvement.

  • Competent user of geotechnical software in earthworks, deep and shallow foundations, retaining structures and systems (such as SlopeW, WALLAP, Oasys Suite). Experience in using FE 2D and 3D analyses (such as Plaxis, Midas) would be an advantage.

  • Management experience of technical staff and projects. Good oral, written, graphical communication skills are required. Experience of writing complex technical reports, wide ranging specifications and contract documents would be an advantage.

  • Willingness to travel within the UK and overseas for limited periods is essential. Previous site and/or overseas experience will be an advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A civil engineering first degree (BSc, BEng or MEng or equivalent) is essential.

  • A masters or PhD in a geotechnical subject would be an advantage.

  • MICE (or equivalent) CEng is required with minimum of 5 years’ experience in ground engineering.
