AECOM is looking for an experienced surface Water Scientist to join our growing Water Environment team. This is a multi-disciplinary team with specialists in geomorphology, hydrology, hydro-ecology, water quality and hydrogeology and we encourage applicants who have experiences in these fields. We work for clients from across the public and private sectors, including the Environment Agency, Highways England, Water Companies, River Trusts as well as developers and overseas clients. We are also involved in major ongoing projects such as HS2 and Lower Thames Crossing and are responsible for water environment chapters in ES’s and WFD assessments.
A selection of our current and recent projects includes:
Developing catchment wide river restoration plans for water companies;
Developing a modelling approach to inform management decisions at water level dependent designated sites;
Producing the Fish and Eel Pass Guide to enable safe passage at in channel structures such as pumping stations and weirs;
Designing and helping delivering awards fish passes and river restoration schemes;
Deriving catchment improvements for the River Rede, to improve the health of the river;
Undertaking desk studies, consultation, water quality monitoring, and site surveys to assess the impact of major new infrastructure and developments including WFD assessments and Environmental Permitting; and
Developing water quality monitoring programmes, pollution prevention strategies and mitigation / monitoring plans for the construction of major infrastructure projects.
We are seeking to recruit a Senior or Principal Water Scientist to assist with and manage a range of survey and investigative projects. The majority of our work is in the fluvial environment, although a significant proportion is also focused on estuaries, lakes and the marine environment. We envisage successful candidates to have experience off and be able to deliver the following types of work to a high standard:
Ability to work collaboratively and iteratively within a multi-disciplinary team;
Water quality studies;
WFD / Environmental Compliance studies;
Pollution prevention advice;
Statutory and non-statutory stakeholder engagement and management;
Be aware of and understand the AECOM IMS procedures, their importance and their application to projects; and
Project management (including client management), technical proposal and report writing.
To be successful in this role we are looking for applicants from experienced professionals who have worked in a similar role. They should:
Be qualified to degree level in relevant subject (e.g. geography, environmental science);
Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and regulations to ensure compliance and “has strong analytical / numerical skills;”
Work is performed with minimal direction;
Plans and organizes project studies;
Overseeing work of less experienced scientists;
Have experience in hydrology (low flows and flood risk), hydromorphology, water quality and / or hydroecology and a strong understanding of aquatic systems;
Experience of undertaking environmental impact and WFD assessments, including in support of EIA projects;
Have excellent report writing;
Have strong project management skills;
Have experience of bid preparation and drafting technical proposals;
Have line managed others;
Have experience using GIS and preparation of figures and presentations; and
Have strong communication skills.
