Job Description

With more than 85 years in the industry, AECOM is recognised as an expert in dam and reservoir engineering, having worked on tens of thousands of dams and water resources projects around the globe. We offer solutions in every facet of dam engineering from planning and feasibility through design and construction, commissioning, operation, ongoing dam safety monitoring, maintenance, rehabilitation, and decommissioning.

We have over 30 specialist Dams & Reservoirs Engineers based across our key Water Resources teams in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast and Leeds. These skills are supplemented by support teams comprising specialists in Geotechnics, Hydrology & Hydraulics, Structures, H&S, Environment, Data and Project Management.

Building on a relationship spanning more than 20 years, AECOM continue to be a key framework consultant for Scottish Water ensuring compliance with the Reservoirs (Scotland) Act 2011 and delivering asset management services for over 280 reservoirs, including provision of panel engineers, inspection and supervision, design of remedial works and of new dam structures. AECOM has also been the main provider of Dam Engineering Services to NI Water for approximately 50 years and is also actively providing Reservoir Engineering Services to Irish Water. In addition, we provide Reservoir Engineering Services to many Local Councils, Enforcement Authorities and multiple private owners.

AECOM also have a global presence with key hubs in the USA, Australia, Africa and India and we have designed and supervised the construction of multiple large dams across the globe. We will offer you a strong pipeline of challenging projects with the potential to work on international assignments should this be of interest.

The Role

The role of the Dam Engineer (Dams & Reservoirs) is to carry out a wide range of studies, reviews and designs for new and existing reservoirs. Under the guidance of senior engineers, the work will include activities such as: undertaking reservoir related design works associated with the maintenance and/or upgrading of reservoirs with hydraulic reviews and preparation of design/construction drawings along with associated specifications and Health & Safety documentation.

The role will include the opportunity to visit many reservoir sites and undertake site surveys and supervision of topographical surveys, ground investigations, CCTV surveys and construction works.

Assisting other panel engineers within the company will allow and form an integral part of your training and development with a view to becoming chartered and a Supervising Engineer yourself.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Hydrology or Geotechnical Engineering, or an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and working towards becoming Chartered (CEng) with the Institution of Civil Engineers.

  • Have civil engineering design skills and an appreciation of; detailed design, geotechnics, structures, hydraulics, site investigations, site supervision and record keeping.

  • Have familiarity with the preparation of engineering documentation including; technical notes, drawings, specifications, and contract documents and will be given the opportunity to be responsible for the overall delivery of reservoir engineering projects, from feasibility to detailed design and construction completion.

  • Be willing to develop project management skills and with the aim of running your own D&R projects in the future.

  • Be able to engage positively and collaboratively with your team members and other internal disciplines and external stakeholders.
