Our Transport Planning Unit in Dublin includes a team of economists that provides consultancy services to a range of clients in Ireland and across the EU. This consultancy team currently has a vacancy for an Economic Consultant with academic training in and, ideally, experience of economic analysis and research, consultancy public service or industry capacity.
The team provides economic input into transportation and infrastructure projects. It prepares Economic Impact Assessments and Cost-Benefit Analyses, with many projects complying with the Public Spending Code. The team is also involved in the evaluation of public spending programmes, and provides economic advice to a variety of policymakers. The team also provides economic analysis and advice in wider policy issues to private and public sector clients.
Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of studies. A selection of our recent projects includes:
A study on future skills needs for the Irish Built Environment Sector, for the Department of Business Enterprise and Innovation
Research and evaluation advice for the Transport Infrastructure Ireland including development of aspects of their Project Appraisal Guidelines, evaluation of major projects and ad hoc advice on issues such as mainstreaming sustainability into transport schemes
Economics advisory services for National Transport Authority of Ireland, including developing the business case for BusConnects and update of the Taxi Cost Index
Development of tourism investment decision support tools for Fáilte Ireland
A long-term evaluation project on the introduction of sustainable travel measures in pilot “Smarter Travel Areas” in Ireland
The role will cover the following responsibilities:
Technical leadership in carrying out economic consulting
Managing the relationship between AECOM and clients as studies are progressed
Communicating the results of our work to a range of audiences
Identifying opportunities for the AECOM economics team, and working with the head of the team to convert these into sales
Research including literature reviews
Quantitative and financial analyses
You will be an economics graduate, preferably with a master's degree, with significant experience working in a similar role in a consulting firm or a relevant public sector organisation or as an independent consultant. You would be joining a team carrying out economic consulting and evaluation across a wide range of wider policy areas but experience and interest in transport would be an advantage. There is a focus on public sector economics, as many of our clients operate under and adhere to the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform's "Public Spending Code".
We are looking for a person who has a good understanding of responsibilities and workflow, and who can hit the ground running after joining the economics team. You will have a significant technical role to play in the team, but will not necessarily have to lead in each project. We are looking for excellent technical skills and strong personal initiative.
A good combination of the following skills will be required:
Public sector focus, as many of our clients are government and statutory agencies
Ability to convey complex economic issues to a diverse range of audiences, in a clear and concise manner
Business development relating to new opportunities
Strong analytic skills, data management and statistics, economic modelling and econometric capabilities
Ability to research local and regional economic issues
Ability to advise on the development of dynamic regional and local economies
Development of solutions to issues such as labour markets, education and skills, deprivation and social inclusion, inward investment, and business development
Preparation of clear, well-written, reports based on project outcomes.
As a principal in AECOM, you would be expected to:
Demonstrate exceptional competence and achievement over a sustained period in this field
Possess technical excellence in this area and understand its contribution to the success of the firm
Have the capability to possess full technical control over some projects
Source and follow up on business development leads
Supervise the work of others and conduct performance evaluations
- Degree/Masters qualification in an economics subject (e.g. geography, mathematics, engineering, economics) from an accredited college or university, or overall equivalent experience
