Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Senior Associate or Associate Principal, Real Estate Advisory & Economics. This position can be based at AECOM offices to include Arlington, VA; Los Angeles, CA, Oakland, CA; San Diego, CA; Chicago, IL or Dallas, TX. Other AECOM office locations can be considered if necessary.

Our Real Estate Advisory + Economics practice helps clients evaluate and make decisions about feasibility, financial requirements, social impact, risk and prospects for success. We pull ideas into focus and sharpen the boundaries of a preliminary plan or concept for regional and place-based economic development, urban revitalization, real estate, tourism and culture.

Collaborating with other disciplines, our team develops strategies that respond to the market, attract financing and enable implementation. We address challenges through clear communication, creative thinking and structured, impartial analysis. Our global experience and comprehensive, integrated approach help us understand how multiple factors influence value and feasibility. It’s not just about the market, but also project design, public policies and regulations, site conditions, mitigation requirements, development and financing costs, phasing and implementation challenges.


The Real Estate practice is looking for a subject matter expert that can support integrated pursuits and provide guidance and training to junior staff. With an Americas practice, we are seeking candidates that can act as a national leader within a specific focus sector. Potential focus areas include Resilience & Climate Adaption, Innovation & Technology, Transit Oriented Development & Value Capture, Affordable and Missing Middle Housing. The role would report directly to the Americas Lead for the practice.

We are looking for candidate based in one of our major metros who has a proven track record and a broad professional network, combined with the ability to lead business development activities; grow market share, impact and presence; and build AECOM’s brand as a trusted economic and real estate strategy firm, differentiating AECOM in the region.

The selected candidate will join AECOM with the primary objective of acting as a subject matter expert building relationships with internal practices and external clients around the world. Day-to-day tasks will require analysis and modeling, business development activities and the direction of project teams to ensure top quality and timely work products which satisfy clients’ needs.

The successful candidate will have deep expertise in some of the following topics and familiarity with the remainder: Real estate economics, including market and financial feasibility analysis; economic development strategies for redevelopment, innovation & upskilling, economic resilience; public-private partnerships and transaction support; housing and community development, including public sector planning; public finance, including fiscal impact analyses and infrastructure financing strategies; and the economic justification of resilience and climate adaptation strategies.

Level Specific Responsibilities:

  • Participates in marketing and business development of new opportunities.

  • Responsible for working on the development and the production of commercial real estate forecasts.

  • Must have econometric capabilities, an understanding of commercial real estate and regional markets, familiarity with forecasting, and the ability to work in database and programming environments.

  • Researches local and regional economic issues, and provides consultation regarding the development of dynamic regional and local economies, as well as urban and rural regeneration.

  • Proposes solutions to issues such as labor markets, education and skills, deprivation and social inclusion, inward investment and business development.

  • May draft and prepare reports based on project outcomes.

  • Highly experienced professional with full project management authority and accountability for larger, more visible, more complex projects.

  • Demonstrates exceptional competence and achievement over sustained period in this field.

  • Possesses technical excellence in specialty area that is critical to the success of the firm.

  • May possess full technical control over project.

  • Sources and follows up on business development leads.

  • May supervise the work of others and conduct performance evaluations.

  • Financial and project management goals are defined by the organization annually.

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS and 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Economics, Real Estate, or City Planning

  • 7+ years of work experience in real estate, economic development, market research, development, and/or consulting in a related field

  • Demonstrated business development and practice leadership skills

  • Experience working closely and collaboratively with many disciplines, including all aspects of the Buildings business, incorporating architecture, urban design and master planning, as well as our urban infrastructure practice areas including transportation, water, environment and energy

  • Demonstrated experience navigating and thriving in a multi-disciplinary work environment

  • 10+ years' experience a plus

  • Master's Degree a plus
