Job Description

AECOM is seeking an experience Architecture Director to be based in Denver, CO.

In collaboration with the Managing Principal and Operations Director, the Architecture Director establishes the general direction and strategy for practice activities such as client targeting, business development, client relationship management, and advocacy for design and delivery excellence within the office. The Architecture Design Director consistently demonstrates a commitment to our core values and creates a culture for the Practice that shapes it as a high-achieving and sustainable enterprise.

LEADERSHIP

The most important attribute for this position is the successful track record of leading and fostering a positive culture in a studio environment while winning work in several project types and market sectors.

In addition, you will be expected to:

  • Foster and grow a Practice with an ability to motivate & inspire.

  • Develop and implement strategic objectives in concert with the local office objectives, regional practice, and the corporation.

  • Demonstrate a high degree of self-management, self-awareness, social awareness and relationship management skills.

  • Demonstrate effectiveness in working in a team setting, communicating with others, customer satisfaction, and technical competence.

  • Mentor, train, and support the professional growth of team members, fostering a collaborative and creative studio culture within architecture as well as in multi discipline environment.

  • Involvement in civic and professional associations aligned with the overall goals of our Practice.

  • Work closely with clients to understand their needs and vision, and translate those requirements into innovative and functional design concepts.

  • Maintain the ability to synthesize information, strategize project approaches and respond to managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

  • Equally balance your creative and analytic strengths.

  • Lead and inspire a team of architects and designers to create exceptional architectural designs that align with Practice’s vision and goals.

  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and sustainable design practices, integrating them into the studio's projects.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

This position will maintain client relationships and consistently identify opportunities for new, inspiring work for the Practice, which is an integrated team of architectural, landscape, planning, and engineering professionals.

Responsibilities include:

  • Identification of target clients and development of a business development plan with the Managing Principal and other Business Development professionals

  • Develop relationships with clients and contractors in defined growth markets to grow a pipeline of future projects and partnering opportunities

  • The marketing of our services is done in tandem with the Managing Principal, Business Development, Marketing and Design and Engineering Principals of the firm

  • Consistent participation and application in all Practice go/no-go evaluations

  • Marketing Leadership via active participation in projects through all phases, from initial client contacts through marketing pursuits, sales efforts and contract negotiations

  • Attendance and participation in firm-wide internal marketing meetings

  • An Architecture Design Director will often remain engaged in the project, participating in the project kick-off, feasibility studies, strategic planning, master planning, programming, conceptual studies, schematic, design, design development, construction documentation, bidding and award, construction administration, move-in, follow-up and on-going client relationship maintenance.

Practice Performance

This position will work in tandem with the Operations Director to monitor, adjust, and advance the Practice.

Typical duties include:

  • Work with the Operations Director and Managing Principal to ensure that project performance targets are achieved, and studio issues are proactively addressed as needed to achieve the targets

  • Provide input on hiring prospective employees, with primary focus on strategic hires and senior personnel.

  • Coordinate communication efforts within the Practice and maintain advocacy and strong regional presence by connecting with other Practice leaders regionally.

  • Review budgeting and financial forecasting prepared by Project Managers to help create a viable Architecture Studio budget in concert with the Practice and Project budgets.

  • Make recommendations and take actions when necessary to drive practice performance when it comes to strategic objectives, guidelines, quality, standards and principles.

IDEAL CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERTISE

The ideal candidate will, demonstrate proven leadership abilities and demonstrate proficiencies with professional and technical tools commonly utilized in this position while meeting minimum education and experience requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Architecture, Interior Design, or related field + 10 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education, including 2 years of leadership

  • Professional registration as an architect or interior designer

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master’s degree in architecture

  • Established client relationships in Colorado

  • Personable, able to create meaningful relationships with clients, contractors or other stakeholders both internally and externally, with a focus of externally.

  • Leadership experience, including managing client expectations, multi-disciplinary teams, and meeting scope/schedule/budget

  • Advanced knowledge of the architectural planning and design process, construction documentation, construction administration, and code requirements

  • Innovative problem solver with excellent verbal/written communication and presentation skills and a proven ability to manage people and projects through strong demonstrated organizational skills

  • Independent working capability in the Microsoft Office Suite of Programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook as fundamental professional tools required for Studio and Client communications

  • Ability to communicate expectations, and through leadership gain consensus and accountability of teams.

  • Familiarity with the Adobe Suite of graphics and production programs in support of marketing and business development activities

  • Minimum of entry-level proficiency with primary production platforms: AutoCAD and Revit in support of projects and the team’s work, but not for developing deliverables

  • Detail-oriented, meticulous, process-oriented, yet open to creativity and motivated by innovation

  • Experience working on concurrent projects in various stages of development and promoting an emphasis on design, sustainability, and innovation

  • Has a track record of developing successful proposals for targeted pursuits

  • Sponsorship is not available for this role

  • Offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The salary range for this position is $140,000 - $190,000.
