AECOM Principal Highways Design Engineer in Croydon, United Kingdom

Job Summary

Our Highways team currently has a vacancy for a Principal Engineer with team management and highways technical experience, to work on local, national and international schemes, based out of our Croydon office.

The successful candidate will join AECOM’s established highways business which continues to expand following several major project wins. The successful candidate will have demonstrable highways experience, show leadership qualities and have experience of major highways project management.

The highways business in Croydon has significant skills, experience and an established culture in the delivery of all types of highway schemes; from major highways projects for Clients including Highways England, Welsh Government and Local authorities to trunk road maintenance schemes through the South East for Highways England.

Our modern offices are located in a vibrant area of Croydon and a short walk from the rail station and our teams have an established reputation for quality and delivery. We are looking to enhance and enlarge these teams with people who have a sound technical background and share our enthusiasm and determination.

Our client list includes Highways England, Welsh Government, Oxfordshire County Council, Buckinghamshire County Council, Kent County Council and other Local Authorities in the South East and various contractors.

Projects we are currently working on in the South East include:

  • Highways England Road Investment Strategy programme for East and Midlands, including A46 Coventry Junctions, A46 Binley and A46 Walsgrave Improvement

  • A229 Bluebell Hill Improvement

  • A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet Improvement,

  • Didcot Garden Town schemes

  • South East Aylesbury Link Road,

  • Transport for London schemes

  • OD East Capital Delivery Programme

The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the job/project accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the necessary standard:

  • Provide technical input, technical leadership and project management across a range of specialisms in the field of highway engineering.

  • Reporting to Associate Directors and Directors you will undertake a variety of tasks providing as an individual or through team effort, a range of design and written deliverables.

  • Show technical leadership and through experience mentor and guide the skills of others in computer based applications and tasks including use of software such as MX, OpenRoads, Civils3D, WinDES, and the Microsoft Office Suite of programmes including MS Project.

  • Undertake Project activities in line with Company Policy, including technical and commercial aspects, as appropriate to your grade.

  • Take a lead role on projects within skill area.

  • Plan, lead and undertake site visits, as required.

  • Plan and attend meetings – internal and external, as required.

  • Liaison with sub-consultants and external parties, as required.

  • Participate as a team member on a number of levels, including; office, discipline and project.

  • Be proactive and contribute to a safer work environment.

Minimum Requirements

  • Extensive technical leadership and project management experience across a range of specialisms in the field of highway engineering

  • Experience of team management including; line management; technical development and mentoring of staff; efficient resourcing of projects;

  • Experience of monitoring financial and programme performance.

  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary environment, operating across a matrix of projects.

  • Experience of preparing and reviewing technical reports

  • Experience of preparing for and attending meetings with clients and/or statutory consultees.

  • Experience of working in the D&B arena particularly preparing tenders for contractors.

  • Full awareness of H&S Legislation and how it is applied to the design process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • We would expect a candidate at this level to be an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered (CEng) Engineer.
