Job Information

AECOM Principal Engineer in Croydon, United Kingdom

Job Summary

At AECOM, we’re delivering a better world.

We are trusted to bring together the best people, ideas, technical expertise, and digital solutions to our work in transportation, buildings, water, the environment, and new energy. We’re one global team – 47,000 strong – driven by a common purpose to deliver a better world.

As we look ahead for 2022, we continue to grow and to support that growth, we are now recruiting a Principal Engineer to join our Bridges and Structures team in Croydon with opportunity to work flexibly between the office and from home.

What will you do?

We have been appointed across five rail routes for the Civil Assessments Framework Agreement (CAFA) contract and our team in Croydon supports the Anglia, Kent, Sussex, and Wessex routes.

As a Principal Engineer, you will have the ability to interpret sometimes complicated legacy structures up to 150 years old which form part of our existing rail infrastructure, midway through their lives to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the UK network. In the delivery of our work, we aim to safeguard the public who use the network, whilst ensuring the bridges and structures we work to upgrade with Network Rail are more sustainable for our future generations and minimising operational carbon. There are opportunities to innovate within the role such as the development of Digital Twins where assets can be monitored and modelled in real time, allowing us to be more proactive.

The role will also play a key part in overseeing our more junior team members, ensuring their safety on site, and helping maximise their potential to be industry leading engineers of the future.

Typical work may include:

  • Undertaking Level 1 (grillages) & Level 2 (FEA) assessments of overbridges, footbridges, and underbridges to a multitude of structural materials including steel, wrought-iron, cast-iron, pre-stressed concrete, and masonry arches.

  • Supervising inspection and structural assessment work and assuring technical accuracy and quality across reports.

  • For more complicated projects you may need to undertake calculations and modelling of the bridges using information from historic drawings and notes from inspections.

  • Scheduling and planning for site works and safe access in advance of bridge inspections.

Minimum Requirements

You will have experience in the inspection and assessment of rail bridges as well as a degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and Chartership (or equivalent experience), Network Rail STE4 and PTS accreditations. You will need a working knowledge of contract scope and commercial management and a commitment to comply with Health and Safety at Work and meeting the needs of Clients.

You will also need to have some experience in leading small to medium-sized teams inspecting highway and/or railway structures, be well-versed in finite element analysis, and have an appreciation of the routes of professional development needed by young engineers who want to achieve chartership and beyond.

Preferred Qualifications

You will have a working knowledge of structural analysis in LUSAS or similar software package. If not currently chartered, you may have experience as an ICE Delegated Engineer (or equivalent), will need to demonstrate a clear plan to progress to Chartered Membership of a recognised Professional Institution in the near future. AECOM offers a training scheme to support you with this.

What We Offer

We will give you the flexibility you need to do your best work with hybrid work options. Whether you’re working from an AECOM office, remote location or at a client site, you will be working in a dynamic environment where your integrity, entrepreneurial spirit and pioneering mindset are championed.

You will help us foster a culture of equity, diversity and inclusion – a safe and respectful workplace, where we invite everyone to bring their whole selves to work using their unique talents, backgrounds and expertise to create transformational outcomes for our clients.

When you join us, you will connect and collaborate with a global network of experts – planners, designers, engineers, scientists, consultants, program and construction managers – leading the change toward a more sustainable and equitable future. Join us and let’s get started.
