Job Summary

Our Chesterfield based Highways team currently has vacancies for Senior Highway Design Engineers to work on our portfolio of major projects.Chesterfield, the gateway to the Peak district, is famous for its crooked spire, its 800 year old market and its proximity to Chatsworth House. It’s a great place to live and work.

We are currently engaged on various interesting and challenging projects, including Highways England’s Regional Investment Programme of major upgrades and HS2. We are looking for individuals with demonstrable highways experience and a sound technical background that share our enthusiasm and determination to develop our business.

The services that we offer to clients include the full range and scope of highways work from feasibility stage through the development phase and planning and DCO process, preliminary design, detailed design and site supervision. We have considerable experience of working with contractors on Design and Build schemes as well as working directly for clients, from both the private and public sector.

Job Responsibilities:

The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the expected standards.

  • Undertake highway design in accordance with UK standards and best practice including DMRB and MCHW

  • Delivery of specified project outcomes on time, within budget and to the quality required

  • Ensuring compliance with relevant technical standards and undertake checks of designs completed by others

  • Managing the workload and the technical management and oversight of design team members

  • Undertake Health & Safety duties, fulfilling all responsibilities for health and safety in design including preparing designer’s risk assessments

  • Technical management of medium sized projects or tasks

  • Construct 3D models of projects in a BIM environment

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and clients, using tools for information sharing such as Common Data Environments

  • Writing and overseeing the preparation of contract documents and technical reports

  • Communication to junior team members, the Project Manager, wider organisation and external parties

  • Coaching, mentoring and developing junior staff

  • Managing and developing both internal and external client relationships

  • Identification and management of project risks

  • Flexibility and adaptability to operate within a rapidly changing environment

Minimum Requirements

  • Knowledge of standard engineering practices, techniques and procedures

  • Understanding of design principles and ability to practically apply them

  • Significant design experience using DMRB in relation to the design of major highway infrastructure including geometric design, interchanges/roundabouts, drainage, signing, road markings and safety barrier

  • Experience of delivering design deliverables in accordance with an accredited quality control system (eg ISO 9001)

  • Client focus being able to anticipate future customer needs

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Demonstrable understanding of Health and Safety including CDM. The individual will have proven experience of working collaboratively as part of a team developing a range of major highway and infrastructure projects. The role will suit a self-motivated individual who is aspiring to take a lead role in delivering high quality projects assisting the Project Manager in the design development of schemes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BSc, BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering

  • Chartered/Incorporated Engineer or working towards the professional qualification

  • Site supervision experience would be an advantage;

  • Experience of Mx / 3D Civils experience

  • Experience of Bentley OpenRoads would be an advantage
